Jimmy Butler Injury Update: Warriors Star Exits Game 2 with Pelvis Contusion

The Golden State Warriors suffered more than just a scoreboard loss in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets. Star wing Jimmy Butler exited early after a hard fall in the first quarter, sending a wave of concern through Warriors fans and the NBA community alike. The injury came during a heated matchup in Houston, and while early signs are somewhat optimistic, his availability for the rest of the series remains uncertain.

Butler sustained the injury after an awkward landing while going up for a rebound. He was undercut by Amen Thompson, a young Rockets forward, and hit the court hard. He walked off on his own power but was ruled out for the remainder of the game with what was later identified as a pelvis contusion.

X-Rays Are Clear, But MRI Will Reveal More

Following the game, Butler underwent an X-ray at the Toyota Center, which fortunately showed no major structural damage, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard. However, caution remains the name of the game—an MRI has been scheduled to further evaluate the extent of the injury.

Butler will travel back to the Bay Area after Game 3 on Wednesday night, with the MRI expected shortly after his arrival in San Francisco. His recovery timeline is unclear at the moment, but the Warriors are holding out hope that he won’t be sidelined for long.

Head coach Steve Kerr struck a cautiously optimistic tone after the loss, saying he spoke with Butler postgame. “He always says he’s going to be fine,” Kerr told reporters. “That’s just who he is. He’s one of the toughest guys I’ve ever coached.”

Kuminga Steps In, Game 3 Looms Large

With Butler out, the Warriors turned to Jonathan Kuminga, who had fallen out of the rotation but was ready when his number was called. Kuminga contributed 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists in 26 minutes off the bench. While not a flawless performance, his hustle gave the Warriors some much-needed energy in Butler’s absence.

The Warriors now return to San Francisco for Game 3 on Saturday night at Chase Center. The team will have Thursday and Friday off to regroup, assess Butler’s health, and prepare a game plan—whether or not their veteran star is ready to go.

With the series now tied 1-1, Butler’s health could become the deciding factor. Known for his playoff grit and ability to change games with his two-way play, his presence—or absence—will likely shape the rest of the series.
