Jason Momoa Shaves Beard (and Fans Are Shocked) as He Preps for ‘Dune 3’ Return

Jason Momoa is going clean-shaven again—and no, he’s not thrilled about it. The Aquaman star shared a new video this week showing him buzzing off his iconic beard as he gears up to reprise his role as Duncan Idaho in the upcoming Dune 3.

Goddammit, I hate it!” Momoa groaned in the clip, noting that it’s been “about six years—maybe a little more—since I did Dune.”

Only for Denis Villeneuve

Momoa playfully blamed Dune’s Oscar-nominated director, Denis Villeneuve, for the dramatic transformation. “Only for you, Denis!” he said, looking noticeably unhappy as his signature facial hair disappeared.

Momoa originally played Duncan Idaho in 2021’s Dune, joining a blockbuster cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin. Despite his character’s death in the first film, Momoa confirmed back in March that he’s returning for Dune 3.

If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault,” he joked during an appearance on Today, referencing Frank Herbert’s novels that inspired the hit sci-fi saga.

Momoa’s Beard-Free Look Shocks Fans

Fans have long associated Momoa with his rugged appearance, so seeing him clean-shaven sparked strong reactions online. While some applauded his dedication to the role, others couldn’t help but say he looked like a completely different person.

This isn’t the first time he’s shaved for a cause. Back in 2019, Momoa also shaved his beard to promote his environmental company Mananalu, which aims to eliminate single-use plastic bottles from the planet.

Protecting the Planet, One Bottle at a Time

In the same social media post, Momoa gave a shoutout to Mananalu, which he launched in 2019 to promote sustainable water solutions. A proud Hawaiian native, Momoa has been outspoken about protecting the oceans and reducing plastic waste.

He’s even called out fellow celebs. In 2019, he publicly criticized Chris Pratt for holding a plastic water bottle in an Amazon ad.

Bro, I love u but wtf on the water bottle. No single-use plastic. Come on,” he wrote.

Pratt responded in good spirits, agreeing with Momoa’s stance: “Aquaman! You’re completely right… I always carry my big gallon-size reusable water jug around with me too. My bad. I don’t want your home of Atlantis covered in plastic.

What’s Next?

With Dune 3 moving into production, Momoa is diving back into the sci-fi universe fans can’t get enough of. And while losing the beard might hurt, fans are hyped to see Duncan Idaho return in the next chapter of the epic saga.

Dune 3 does not yet have an official release date, but Momoa’s transformation confirms the wheels are turning—and we’re one step closer to another trip to Arrakis.
