Is ‘Suits LA’ Canceled? Why did Suits LA get cancelled?
It’s official. Suits LA, the spinoff of the hit legal drama Suits, is coming to an end. And if you’re just finding out about it, you’re not alone. The show barely had time to build momentum before NBC decided to pull the plug. The series finale will air on May 18, marking the end of a very short-lived chapter in the Suits universe.
Why Did NBC Cancel Suits LA So Quickly?
NBC confirmed that Suits LA is not returning for a second season. The decision comes before the first season even finishes airing. Despite having ties to one of the most-watched streaming shows of 2023, the spinoff struggled to make an impact.
While Suits LA had a few nostalgic nods to the original, including guest appearances from Gabriel Macht (Harvey Specter), David Costabile (Daniel Hardman), and a return from Rick Hoffman (Louis Litt), the show focused on a new set of characters. Stephen Amell led the cast as Ted Black, an entertainment lawyer based in Los Angeles.
NBC likely hoped the Suits name would bring built-in buzz. But the numbers didn’t add up. The show simply didn’t connect with audiences the way the original series did — especially not on the scale that Suits hit after landing on Netflix.
Didn’t Suits Become a Streaming Phenomenon?
Absolutely. Suits exploded in popularity after Netflix added the series in 2023. It quickly became the most-watched show of the summer and stayed on top of Nielsen’s streaming charts for 12 straight weeks. The show racked up nearly 58 billion minutes streamed in 2023 alone, beating long-time champions like Ozark.
But here’s the twist — Suits LA wasn’t part of that streaming success. Netflix passed on picking up the spinoff, meaning viewers had to tune in on NBC or Peacock. That left the show with a much smaller audience, even with its famous title.
Was There Anything Wrong With the New Show?
Not necessarily. Suits LA had potential. It aimed to explore a fresh part of the legal world through the lens of Hollywood law, entertainment deals, and big egos. But viewers were attached to the old characters, the New York setting, and the energy that made the original so binge-worthy.
The new characters hadn’t quite earned the same level of emotional investment. And let’s be real — the bar was high. When you’re following in the footsteps of a global streaming hit, expectations are sky-high.
What Else Did NBC Cancel?
NBC’s decision to axe Suits LA came as part of a larger round of cancellations. Along with Suits LA, NBC also canceled:
- Lopez vs. Lopez (after 3 seasons)
- Night Court (also after 3 seasons)
- The Irrational
- Found
With the NBA set to return to NBC’s primetime lineup this fall, the network is clearly clearing space and refocusing its programming slate. Their annual upfront event is happening soon at Radio City Music Hall, and networks often make big announcements (and big cuts) just before it.
Is This the End of the Suits Franchise?
Not necessarily. While Suits LA didn’t stick, the original show’s record-breaking streaming performance could still inspire future spin-offs or reboots. Creator Aaron Korsh expanded the universe once — and the door isn’t completely closed on doing it again.
The key will be finding the right blend of nostalgia and fresh storytelling. For now, though, fans will have to say goodbye to Suits LA after just 13 episodes.
