Harwinton, Connecticut, Mourns 5-Year-Old Olivia Videtto After Fatal Playscape Fall
HARWINTON, Conn. — A small Connecticut community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of a young student after a tragic accident at a Harwinton home claimed the life of 5-year-old Olivia Videtto.
According to Connecticut State Police, the incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. on Sunday when Olivia fell from a playscape at a residence in Harwinton. Emergency responders were called to the scene after reports that the child had suffered a serious head injury.
Olivia was airlifted by LifeStar helicopter to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for emergency treatment. Despite efforts by medical staff, authorities confirmed that she later died from her injuries.
State police said they learned early Monday morning that Olivia had succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the fall. The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.
Young Student Remembered by School and Community
Olivia was a kindergarten student at Harwinton Consolidated School, part of Region 10 Public Schools. News of her passing sent shockwaves through the school community, where classmates, teachers, and staff members are now mourning the loss of a young life.
Region 10 Superintendent Fran Thompson shared a message with families on Monday, expressing sorrow over the tragedy and extending condolences to those affected.
“Today, our Region 10 community is grieving the loss of Olivia Videtto, a kindergarten student at Harwinton Consolidated School, who passed away following injuries sustained in an accident over the weekend,” Thompson said.
The superintendent noted that crisis support teams have been made available to students, families, and staff members as they cope with the loss. School officials also encouraged parents to speak with their children and seek additional support if needed.
Thompson emphasized that schools are more than places of learning, describing them as communities connected through relationships, care, and shared experiences. She asked families to keep Olivia and her loved ones in their thoughts during this difficult time.
Town Leaders Offer Condolences
Harwinton officials also released statements following Olivia’s death, acknowledging the profound impact the tragedy has had across the town.
First Selectman Michael R. Criss said there were no words that could adequately express the sorrow being felt throughout the community.
He said Olivia’s loss is being deeply felt by her family, friends, classmates, teachers, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. The town extended its condolences to the Videtto family and pledged support for those affected by the tragedy.
“As a community, let us come together to support one another, hold our loved ones a little closer, and keep Olivia and her family in our hearts,” Criss said.
The loss has resonated far beyond the school grounds, with residents rallying around the family and reflecting on the fragility of life.
Community leaders have encouraged neighbors to support one another as they navigate the grief surrounding the unexpected death of a child.
Authorities have not released additional details about the accident, and state police continue to investigate exactly how the fall occurred.
For now, Harwinton residents, educators, and students are remembering Olivia as a beloved young girl whose life ended far too soon, leaving behind a community united in sorrow and support for her family.
