Harrisburg 8th Grader Ryfeek Watson, 14, Identified as Victim in Fatal Derry Street Pedestrian Crash
The Dauphin County Coroner has identified the 14-year-old boy fatally struck by a vehicle on Derry Street in Harrisburg last Thursday as Ryfeek Watson, a student at Rowland Academy who was known and loved by his teachers and classmates.
Watson was hit around 6:30 p.m. on May 28 in the 2000 block of Derry Street.
Despite officers and emergency medical personnel providing immediate care at the scene, Watson was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from multiple traumatic injuries. The coroner ruled his death accidental.
During a press conference held on Monday, Harrisburg Police Captain Kyle Gautsch told reporters that Watson ran into the road at the time of the crash and that the driver involved remained on scene. No charges are pending at this time, though the investigation is ongoing.
A School and Community Left Grieving
Watson was a student at Rowland Academy, a Harrisburg School District school that serves 7th and 8th graders. News of his death hit the school community hard.
A teacher described the loss in heartbreaking terms, saying that children are not supposed to die, capturing the grief shared by educators, students, and neighbors across the city.
The Harrisburg School District acted quickly to support students following the tragedy. Grief counselors were made available at both Rowland Academy and Harrisburg High School beginning Monday.
District officials released a statement acknowledging the pain being felt across the community while asking for patience and privacy from the families involved.
Watson’s death came just days after another Harrisburg student, Camar Cordero, a high school student, was shot and killed after stepping off a school bus.
The back-to-back losses of two young students within the same school district left the entire Harrisburg community reeling and searching for ways to come together.
A Vigil Planned to Honor Two Young Lives
The Harrisburg School District announced it is organizing a memorial vigil to honor both Ryfeek Watson and Camar Cordero.
Details of the vigil will be shared with the community in the coming days, according to district officials, who said they are working closely with both families during this devastating time.
In the meantime, community members have already begun organizing to support Watson’s family. A fundraising effort has been launched to help cover funeral expenses, with neighbors and supporters rallying around his loved ones in the wake of the tragedy.
The losses of Watson and Cordero have prompted broader conversations in Harrisburg about the safety of young people in the city. Mayor and community leaders have called for unity, urging residents to come together rather than let grief and frustration divide them.
The violence and the accidents taking young lives have renewed calls from parents, educators, and advocates for more resources aimed at keeping children safe both in schools and in their neighborhoods.
Watson was just 14 years old, in the middle of his school years, with his future still ahead of him. His death, along with Cordero’s, serves as a painful reminder of the fragility of young life and the deep impact these losses leave on families, teachers, and entire communities.
Anyone wishing to support Ryfeek Watson’s family with funeral costs can look for the GoFundMe organized by community members.
Those experiencing grief or in need of mental health support following these tragedies are encouraged to reach out to the Harrisburg School District, which continues to have counseling resources available for students and staff.
