A Star of Eccentric Characters
Valerie was best known for playing offbeat and colorful women. One of her most memorable roles was Eve in Northern Exposure, a hypochondriac who was married to Adam Arkin’s character. She appeared in just five episodes between 1991 and 1994, but made such a strong impression that she won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1992.
Later, she played Alma Hodge on Desperate Housewives, a mysterious and manipulative woman who added plenty of drama to the show’s third season. Fans also loved her as Victoria MacElroy, a strict but funny teacher on Young Sheldon, and as Lorna Harding, a hilariously self-centered mother-in-law in Dead to Me.
Big-Screen Roles and Stage Credits
In 2020, Valerie was nominated for a Spirit Award for her supporting role in French Exit, where she starred alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges. She played Madame Reynard, a lonely widow living in Paris who bonds with Pfeiffer’s character in strange and touching ways.
Before her TV and movie fame, Valerie built a strong career on the stage. She acted in several Broadway productions, including Dracula with Raul Julia and Play Memory directed by Harold Prince. She also won Obie Awards for her performances in Top Girls and Talking Heads.
