Duluth police are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital late Monday night in the city’s popular Canal Park district.
Officers responded around 10 p.m. to reports of gunfire near Little Angie’s restaurant, inside the DeWitt Seitz Building on the 400 block of Canal Park Drive. Witnesses reported a heavy police presence at the scene, and the area outside the building was quickly closed off as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
A witness told local reporters that an ambulance left the scene shortly after the shooting was reported. Police later confirmed that a man suffering from a gunshot wound was taken to a nearby hospital. Officials say his injuries are not considered life-threatening and he is expected to recover.
As of Monday night, no suspect had been taken into custody, and the Duluth Police Department says the case remains an open and active investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Duluth Police Violent Crimes Unit at 218 730 5050.
Second Shooting This Week Rattles Duluth Community
The Canal Park shooting comes just days after another shooting in the city’s East Hillside neighborhood left two people injured, one of them critically.
That earlier incident, which happened Friday evening near North 9th Avenue East and 7th Street, involved Daniel Nelson, a local business owner known for his neon sign work, and his girlfriend. Police say a person of interest was detained in that case shortly after the shooting occurred.
Friends of Nelson say he was confronted by a stranger outside his home after his girlfriend went to check on a commotion outside.
According to accounts shared by his coworker, the man forced Nelson to the ground and shot him before running away. Nelson’s coworker described the ordeal as devastating, noting that Nelson had only recently been cleared to return to work after major back surgery.
As of Monday, police said Nelson’s condition had stabilized, though investigators have not released further details on a possible motive or the identity of the person detained in that case.
While authorities have not indicated the two shootings are connected, the back-to-back incidents have left many in Duluth on edge, particularly in areas like Canal Park that typically see heavy foot traffic from tourists and locals alike during the summer months. Police are urging residents and visitors to remain cautious and to report any suspicious activity as both investigations continue.
Anyone with information related to either shooting is encouraged to contact Duluth police directly.
