Quenneville resigned from his role with the Florida Panthers in 2021 following an independent investigation into how the Chicago Blackhawks mishandled sexual assault allegations during their 2010 Stanley Cup run.
The report revealed a systemic failure in addressing player Kyle Beach’s accusations against then-video coach Brad Aldrich. While Quenneville maintained that he wasn’t fully aware of the details at the time, the NHL ruled him ineligible to work for any other team without commissioner approval.
In July 2024, Gary Bettman lifted that restriction, citing Quenneville’s “sincere remorse” and “personal accountability.” That move quietly reopened the door — and Anaheim has now officially stepped through it.

The hiring wasn’t rushed. Other names on the shortlist included Jay Woodcroft, Rick Tocchet, and David Carle — the latter of whom ultimately chose to remain at Denver University. The Ducks also reached out to Mike Sullivan, though he accepted the head coaching job with the New York Rangers.
Why Did Anaheim Choose Quenneville?
Quenneville’s coaching résumé is elite. He ranks second all-time in NHL regular-season wins with 969 victories, behind only Scotty Bowman. He’s led four franchises — St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks, and Florida Panthers — and is best known for guiding the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups (2010, 2013, 2015).
For a young Ducks team that has missed the playoffs seven straight seasons, bringing in a proven winner makes sense. Anaheim saw a 21-point improvement in 2024–25, and with emerging talent on the roster, they’re banking on Quenneville’s experience to take them to the next level.
