Desmond Bane Traded to Orlando Magic in Major NBA Off-Season Deal with Grizzlies
Desmond Bane is officially heading to Orlando. The Memphis Grizzlies made a big splash in the NBA off-season by trading their star guard to the Orlando Magic. It’s one of the first major trades of the summer and it has everyone talking.
What Memphis Gets in Return
This deal isn’t just about Bane. Memphis is bringing in some serious value. They’re getting guards Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony. Both players will bring depth and experience to the Grizzlies’ backcourt.
But that’s not all. Memphis also receives the No. 16 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. That gives them a chance to add young talent. On top of that, the Grizzlies secured four future first-round picks. This includes Orlando’s unprotected 2028 and 2030 first-round picks, plus a 2029 pick swap. There’s also a 2026 swap option tied to the Wizards or Suns.
That’s a lot of flexibility for the future.
Orlando Magic Take a Big Swing
Orlando is going all in. They’re giving up Kentavious Caldwell-Pope just one year after signing him. KCP was brought in to boost the team’s three-point shooting, but it didn’t go as planned. He only shot 34.2 percent from deep, which was a big drop from his 40.6 percent the season before.
The Magic are betting that Bane will solve that issue.
Desmond Bane Could Be a Game-Changer
Bane is only 26 and entering the prime of his career. He’s known as one of the top two-way guards in the league. Last season, he averaged a career-high 23.7 points per game. He also hit 3.3 threes per game on 41 percent shooting. That’s elite.
Defensively, he’s no slouch either. He matched his career-high with 1.2 steals per game in the 2023-24 season. Bane signed a five-year, $207 million contract extension with the Grizzlies in July 2023. He’s locked in through the 2028-29 season.
For a team like Orlando, which ranked dead last in three-point percentage last season, adding Bane is a major upgrade.
This trade shakes up the landscape for both franchises. Memphis is clearly focused on building for the future. Orlando, on the other hand, is ready to win now—with Desmond Bane leading the charge.
