David Geffen Files for Divorce After Nearly 2 Years of Marriage
Entertainment tycoon David Geffen has officially filed for divorce, bringing an end to his short-lived marriage with David Armstrong, better known by his former stage name, Donovan Michaels. The couple had been married for just one year and eleven months. Despite the surprise announcement, court records confirm Geffen cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind the split.
Geffen, 82, hired celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser, often nicknamed the “Disso Queen,” to represent him in the proceedings. While divorces involving billionaires often lead to messy financial disputes, this case may be far more straightforward than people expect.
No Prenup, but Not Much to Gain
What makes this story even more unexpected is that the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement before getting married. Given Geffen’s staggering net worth — estimated at $8.7 billion by Forbes — this could have spelled a massive payday for Armstrong.
However, California law complicates things. Even though they were married, Geffen’s wealth is mostly tied up in stocks and equities that are considered separate property. That means Armstrong has no legal claim to those assets. Additionally, dividends from those investments are also treated as separate property. So despite the headlines, Armstrong isn’t likely to walk away with a fortune.
How Much Will Armstrong Receive?
While Armstrong won’t be touching Geffen’s billions, he will receive some financial support. Under California law, spousal support in short-term marriages is typically granted for half the duration of the marriage. In this case, Armstrong is entitled to spousal support for just one year.
The exact amount of monthly support was not disclosed in the divorce papers, but Geffen did agree to pay for Armstrong’s legal fees as well. Though the marriage didn’t last long, the legal split appears to be handled with civility and compliance with state laws.
Geffen’s Legacy Remains Untouched
David Geffen has been retired from active business for over 15 years. Although he no longer earns a salary, his wealth continues to grow thanks to his massive investments. That’s important in this case because only income earned during the marriage is considered communal. Since Geffen’s financial growth came from assets he owned before the marriage, Armstrong cannot lay claim to them.
Geffen has also long been known for his charitable giving. Over the years, he’s donated hundreds of millions to causes in the arts, healthcare, and education. This divorce is unlikely to change his philanthropic legacy or his focus on supporting public institutions.
Why This Split Matters in Hollywood Circles
Though Geffen has stayed away from the spotlight in recent years, his personal life still draws attention in the entertainment world. The billionaire co-founded DreamWorks and Geffen Records, two powerhouses that helped shape music and film in the U.S. His connection with younger creatives, including Armstrong, added a layer of intrigue to their relationship.
With a 50-year age difference and a lack of a prenup, many had raised eyebrows when the couple got married. Still, those close to them had seen the relationship as genuine at the time. The end of the marriage serves as a reminder of how even the wealthiest and most private people go through life changes like anyone else.
