Dallas Cowboys Documentary Revisits Jerry Jones-Jimmy Johnson Feud That Shaped NFL History

The much‑awaited Dallas Cowboys documentary, America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, released on August 19 on Netflix, has once again put the spotlight on one of the most famous rifts in NFL history — the feud between Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and legendary coach Jimmy Johnson.

The eight‑part series dives into the Cowboys’ dominance in the 1990s and features rare archival footage, past NFL highlights, and fresh interviews with Jones, Johnson, Barry Switzer, and iconic Cowboys players including Deion Sanders, Emmitt Smith, and Troy Aikman.

Friends at 18, Rivals at the Top

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson weren’t always at odds. In fact, their story began as teammates at the University of Arkansas, where they forged a strong friendship after winning a national championship together.

As co‑director Chapman Way explains in the documentary:
“Jerry strikes liquid gold [oil], makes $100 million, buys the Dallas Cowboys, and takes this massive risk in hiring his college buddy who had never coached a game in the NFL to come join him on this ride.”

The gamble paid off. Under Johnson, the Cowboys were rebuilt into champions, winning two straight Super Bowls in the early 1990s.

Cracks Begin to Show

But success often comes at a cost. By the fifth season of Jones’ ownership, he began pushing for a bigger role in football operations. This didn’t sit well with Johnson, who preferred complete control on the coaching side. What started as a strong partnership quickly turned into a power struggle.

The tension peaked in 1994, when Jones made a now‑infamous remark at the NFL owners’ meeting, bragging that “500 coaches” could have coached the Cowboys. Johnson left the team shortly after.

Looking back in 2016, Jones admitted his role in the split, telling Texas radio station KTCK:
“I lost my tolerance for a lot of things. I probably should have had a little more tolerance with Jimmy Johnson. Seriously.”

A Long Road to Reconciliation

For decades, the two remained distant, despite their shared legacy. But in 2023, nearly three decades after the split, their feud finally came to an end. Jimmy Johnson was inducted into the Cowboys’ prestigious Ring of Honor, with Jerry Jones delivering an emotional tribute.

“Not only did you inspire your players, and certainly you inspired our fans, but you need to hear how much you personally inspired me,” Jones said in his speech.

Johnson, in turn, thanked his staff, players, loyal fans, and even Jones himself, officially putting the conflict behind them.

Legacy Beyond the Field

With America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys now streaming, fans are reliving both the glory days of Dallas football and the unforgettable saga of a friendship that turned into rivalry — and eventually, reconciliation.
