Arcata, CA Athletic Trainer Shannon Childs, 56, Passes Away After Sudden Health Crisis at Cal Poly Humboldt

Shannon Childs, the beloved Head Athletic Trainer at Cal Poly Humboldt, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026, following a sudden health crisis that began on June 8.

His death has sent shockwaves through the Humboldt athletic community, where he had served for more than 24 years and touched the lives of countless student-athletes across generations.

Childs was more than a trainer to those who knew him. He was a mentor, a confidant, and in many cases, one of the first familiar faces an incoming athlete would encounter.

Whether it was taping ankles before a game, guiding players through ice baths and hamstring treatments, or simply being present in the training room with a word of advice and a sharp sense of humor, Childs made everyone around him feel looked after.

The Humboldt Men’s Soccer program was among the first to share the news publicly, describing Childs as someone who had been a massive part of both the university and the athletic department for nearly a quarter century. The statement said that calling him missed would be a massive understatement and referred to him as a true Lumberjack legend.

A Man Remembered for His Character as Much as His Work

Beyond his professional contributions, those who worked alongside him or played under his care remembered Shannon Childs as a genuinely kind person who showed up fully in every role he occupied.

He was described by close friend Chris Fort as the best person he knew, the best father, and the best man at his wedding. Former players recalled his directness and wit with deep affection.

Milton White Jr., a former Humboldt basketball player, shared a memory of asking Childs to tape him up before his first game, only to be met with the question of whether he even started. White said he told Childs he would know who he was before the season ended, and laughed, remembering how Childs never held back.

Former player Jeremiah Ward wrote an emotional tribute recalling the ice baths, ankle wraps before home games, and conversations in the training room that he said would stay with him forever.

Ward described Childs as a legend of the Humboldt State University Sports Athletic Training Program and said he always made a point to find him and speak with him whenever the basketball team came to play in Southern California.

Childs leaves behind a wife named Vicky and children who have been in the thoughts and prayers of the wider Humboldt community since the news broke. Friends who had known him since childhood, including those who played baseball with him as kids, have expressed heartbreak over how suddenly he was taken.

Tributes have poured in from former athletes, colleagues, and community members across the country, all speaking to the same qualities: warmth, professionalism, loyalty, and a genuine care for the people around him.

Shannon Childs gave nearly half his life to the student-athletes of Cal Poly Humboldt. Those who knew him say the training room will never feel quite the same without him. Rest in peace.
