A frightening afternoon unfolded at Lone Star College in Tomball on Tuesday when campus authorities placed the entire campus on lockdown following a threatening statement made by a visitor inside the college library. The situation was resolved within roughly 30 minutes, with police confirming no weapon was found and no injuries were reported.
The incident began shortly after 1 p.m. when a college employee overheard a visitor make a deeply alarming statement.
According to Lone Star College officials, the individual told people in the library that they were heading to their vehicle to retrieve a rifle and planned to return to campus. The employee wasted no time and immediately reported what they heard to the Lone Star College System Police Department.
Campus officials swiftly issued a lockdown order across the Tomball main campus. An emergency alert was sent to students, faculty, and staff that read:
“ATTENTION: LSC Tomball Main. Lockdown now. Go to nearest room and lock the door and stay quiet. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
Students and employees who received the alert were instructed to shelter in place until further notice.
Law enforcement moved quickly. Officers from the Lone Star College System Police Department located and intercepted the individual before they could re-enter the building.
After making contact with the person, officers searched for a weapon and found none. The individual was determined not to be a student or employee of the college, identifying them as an outside visitor to the campus.
By approximately 1:30 p.m., officials confirmed the campus was safe and lifted the lockdown. The entire incident, from the initial report to the all-clear, lasted around 30 minutes.
Despite the speed of the resolution, the episode left many on campus rattled, as the prospect of an armed individual returning to a library filled with students is every college community’s nightmare.
As of Tuesday afternoon, it remained unclear whether the visitor would face any criminal charges. The Lone Star College System Police Department confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and no further details about the individual’s identity were made available to the public.
In a statement released following the incident, Lone Star College officials addressed the seriousness with which they treat any potential threat on their campuses.
“LSCS takes seriously and fully investigates all alleged threats to ensure the safety and security of our students, employees and facilities,” the statement read.
The quick response from the employee who overheard the threat is being credited with helping authorities act before any harm could be done.
Campus safety officials regularly encourage students and staff to speak up when they witness something concerning, and Tuesday’s events underscored exactly why that matters.
No injuries were reported throughout the duration of the lockdown. Classes and normal campus operations resumed after the all-clear was given. College officials did not say whether any additional security measures would be put in place in response to the incident.
