American Idol Season 24: Will Carrie Underwood Return?

As this season of American Idol edges closer to its grand finale, fans can’t help but look to the future. With the final three contestants—Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts, and John Foster—battling it out for the crown, there’s just as much buzz surrounding the judges’ table as there is on stage.

This year, viewers were treated to a special kind of nostalgia with the return of Idol icon Carrie Underwood. It’s been 20 years since she won the competition and stepped into music superstardom, and seeing her take a seat next to Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan brought back all the feels.

But is Carrie sticking around? Or was this a one-season celebration?

Carrie’s Comeback: A Nod to the Past, or a Step Into the Future?

When Carrie joined the panel this season, she had some big shoes to fill. But she didn’t try to mimic anyone else. According to American Idol showrunner Megan Michaels Wolflick, Carrie brought her own flavor to the panel.

“She really had to carve out her own role,” Megan told TVLine. “She was stepping into the shoes of a former judge, but she needed to be her own person, and she definitely did that.”

Carrie brought more than just star power and glamor. She also brought something crucial—perspective. Megan shared how Carrie’s experience as a contestant gave her a unique ability to offer constructive criticism and heartfelt encouragement. “She knows back in her day how hard she was pushed every week to become the best,” she said.

The mix of nostalgia and real talk has been refreshing. And it’s not just longtime fans who noticed—contestants seemed to genuinely value her feedback.

Still, Carrie has remained quiet about whether she’ll return next season.

Luke and Lionel: Staying Steady in the Spotlight

While Carrie’s return stirred excitement, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie have been Idol regulars since 2018. They’ve built strong chemistry and a steady presence on the panel. So far, there’s been no indication that either one plans to leave.

Megan hinted at optimism when discussing the trio’s future. “It’s early days still, but I love our panel. I think we’re in a good place,” she said. “I’m excited for them to crown their first winner together as a threesome. They’re all passionate about the show.”

And even though nothing is officially confirmed, the tone suggests that the producers are happy with how things are going—and that means fans should be hopeful, too.

Idol Is Here to Stay

One thing we do know for sure: American Idol isn’t going anywhere. The show has already been renewed for another season, and casting is in full swing.

“Obviously, American Idol is coming back as a show, and we already have thousands of submissions coming in for next season,” Megan shared. That’s right—thousands of hopefuls are already lining up for their shot at the spotlight.

But when it comes to the judging panel, the producers are keeping things close to the chest. “We never share our hand before the end of the season,” Megan added. “But it should be coming soon, and we’re excited about the show doing so well.”

What Do You Think? Should Carrie Come Back?

It’s hard to deny that Carrie brought something special to this season. Whether it was her warmth, honesty, or just the reminder of how far you can come after an Idol win, she made a mark.

If you’re loving the current judging trio—or if you have strong thoughts on how the panel should look next season—now’s the time to speak up. Fans have always played a huge part in shaping American Idol, and your voice matters.
