Amen Thompson Shows Heart in Game 7, But Warriors Prove Too Strong
It’s never easy watching your team fall short in a Game 7. But if there’s one silver lining for Houston fans, it’s the performance of Amen Thompson.
The 21-year-old guard gave everything he had on Sunday night in the Rockets’ 103-89 loss to the Golden State Warriors. With the pressure high and the season on the line, Thompson played with fire, finishing with 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists in 37 minutes. He was aggressive, active, and showed flashes of the star he’s becoming.
Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough.
How Did Amen Thompson Perform Under Pressure?
When the lights were brightest, Thompson didn’t back down.
He hit 9 of his 16 shots, stayed perfect at the free-throw line (6-for-6), and almost pulled off a double-double. He also added a block and a steal, staying active on both ends. For a young guard known mostly for his defense, his offensive game really stood out.
He didn’t rely on flashy plays or deep threes. In fact, he only took one shot from beyond the arc. Instead, he attacked the basket, finished through contact, and played with real maturity. For a player in just his second year, this was a performance to be proud of.
What Went Wrong for the Rockets?
As good as Thompson was, the rest of the Rockets just didn’t have it.
Only three Houston players scored in double figures. The team couldn’t find an answer for Golden State’s firepower. Buddy Hield caught fire, dropping 33 points on an insane 12-of-15 shooting night. Stephen Curry added 22 more, and just like that, the Warriors took over.
Houston’s offense stalled for stretches, especially when Golden State tightened up defensively in the second half. They couldn’t match the pace, and once the Warriors built a double-digit lead, it felt like the Rockets were playing catch-up the rest of the night.
