Alison Brie Says the New Scream Movies Let Too Many People live

Alison Brie has a bone to pick with the recent Scream films — she thinks the body count isn’t high enough.

Brie, who played publicist Rebecca Walters in 2011’s Scream 4 (and met a brutal end in a parking garage), shared her thoughts on the franchise while appearing on the Shut Up Evan podcast with her husband, Dave Franco, on August 5.

Franco jokingly suggested that Rebecca should somehow return in a future installment “even though she died brutally,” but Brie countered with a critique of the series’ latest approach.

“Can I tell you my problem with the current era of the Scream franchise? Too many people live,” she said. “The ‘core four’ needs to die!”

The “core four” — sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), plus twins Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) — all survived both 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI. However, neither Barrera nor Ortega will return for Scream 7.

Brie pointed out that the original films weren’t afraid to kill off fan favorites, referencing Jamie Kennedy’s Randy being killed in Scream 2. “We should be down to two of the ‘core four’ by Scream 7,” she said. When Franco reminded her that David Arquette’s beloved Dewey Riley died in the 2022 film, Brie replied, “I know, and that was very sad! That was a mistake. Keep the main three.”

Brie’s comments come as Scream 7 undergoes big changes. Barrera was dropped from the cast in late 2023 over social media posts about the Israel-Hamas war, while Ortega exited due to scheduling conflicts. Neve Campbell, absent from Scream VI after a pay dispute, will return for the new film.

In a twist, Scream 7 will also reportedly feature the return of David Arquette’s Dewey in some form, along with past killers played by Scott Foley (Scream 3) and Matthew Lillard (the 1996 original).

The next installment is set to hit theaters February 26, 2026. Meanwhile, Brie and Franco’s latest horror film Together is in theaters now.
