Who Is Candice Bergen? Meet Chloe Malle’s Mother, Hollywood Star Who Once Played Vogue’s Anna Wintour on SATC

Anna Wintour’s 37-year reign at Vogue has officially come to an end, and her successor is already grabbing headlines. Chloe Malle, Wintour’s newly appointed replacement, is no stranger to the fashion world—after all, she grew up with a Hollywood icon for a mother.

Chloe, who has been running Vogue’s website and cohosting its podcast The Run-Through, has now stepped into one of the most powerful jobs in fashion. “Vogue has already shaped who I am, now I’m excited at the prospect of shaping Vogue,” she told The New York Times. But as her appointment makes waves, attention has quickly turned to her famous mom, Candice Bergen.

Who Is Candice Bergen?

At 79, Candice Bergen is regarded as one of the most talented and versatile American actresses of her time. She shot to fame as the sharp, witty TV journalist Murphy Brown, a role that earned her five Primetime Emmys and two Golden Globes.

Her career on the big screen has been just as impressive. Bergen starred in Starting Over (which earned her an Oscar nomination), as well as box-office favorites like Miss Congeniality, Sweet Home Alabama, Bride Wars, and the feel-good Book Club movies alongside Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, and Mary Steenburgen.

Her Unique Connection to Vogue

In an ironic twist, Candice Bergen once played a character inspired by Anna Wintour herself. Fans of Sex and the City will remember her as Enid Frick, Carrie Bradshaw’s formidable Vogue editor. The role, modelled on Wintour’s presence, became a fan-favorite. Bergen reprised the role in the sequel series And Just Like That and even appeared in the 2008 SATC movie.

The original 2002 episode she featured in was filmed inside Vogue’s former Times Square headquarters—bringing her even closer to the world her daughter now leads for real.

Bergen’s Family Life

Candice Bergen shared daughter Chloe with her late husband, French filmmaker Louis Malle. The two were married from 1980 until Malle’s death in 1995.

In 2000, she remarried, tying the knot with real estate developer Marshall Rose, with whom she spent more than two decades until his passing earlier this year.

A Legacy Passed On

From award-winning TV roles to iconic movie appearances and even a cameo as Vogue’s fictional editor, Candice Bergen has lived a life deeply connected to culture, media, and fashion. Now, her daughter Chloe Malle carries that legacy forward—this time, not on screen but in real life, as she steps into one of fashion’s most influential roles.
