Candace Parker Honored by Chicago Sky in Emotional Jersey Retirement Ceremony

Candace Parker, one of the greatest players in WNBA history, received a hero’s send-off from her hometown on Monday night as the Chicago Sky retired her jersey in front of an emotional crowd. This heartfelt ceremony followed a similar tribute earlier in the season from the Los Angeles Sparks, the team where Parker’s legendary career began.

But this celebration hit different—because it was at home.

A Homegrown Legend Returns to the Rafters

Parker, who grew up in Naperville, Illinois, was visibly moved during the ceremony at the Sky’s home arena. She spoke directly to the people who shaped her, helped her rise, and walked with her through her journey.

“To my family, to my coaches, to my trainers, doctors, teachers, mentors, opponents, teammates, the entire Sky organization. All the supporters through the years are going up in the rafters,” Parker told the crowd.

With tears in her eyes, she acknowledged the deep connection she has to the city that raised her.

“To my wife and my kids, my reason, my happy, my present, my heart, to bring you back home and see the city through your eyes, it’s just unbelievable.”

A Career Shaped by Chicago

Before she became a household name in professional basketball, Candace Parker was already making headlines as a teen. At Naperville Central High School, she led her team to back-to-back state championships in 2003 and 2004, becoming one of the most decorated players in Illinois high school basketball history.

She then starred at the University of Tennessee, winning two NCAA championships before launching her WNBA career with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2008, where she played 13 seasons and won a title in 2016.

But her story came full circle in 2021, when she returned to Chicago as a free agent. It didn’t take long for her to make history again. In just her first season with the Sky, Parker helped the team capture their first-ever WNBA championship. She was selected to the All-Star team both years she played in Chicago.

Parker’s Message to the City

The ceremony wasn’t just a look back—it was a love letter to Illinois and a powerful reminder of where she came from.

“When you tally up the championships, the banners, the state championships, the NCAA championships, and now the jersey in the rafters, it’s because of the bar this city set,” Parker said. “It’s because of the expectations, the bright lights, the lessons learned.”

“Most importantly, it’s because of the people. My heart will always belong to the state of Illinois, the city of Naperville and the city of Chicago. It’s not just where I’m from, but the core of who I am. That’s what home is.”

An Impact Far Beyond the Court

Candace Parker’s influence stretches far beyond basketball. She’s not only been a champion, MVP, and All-Star, but also a voice for women in sports, a mentor to young athletes, and a proud mother and wife. Her presence in Chicago—on and off the court—left a legacy that will live on for generations.

As her No. 3 jersey rose into the rafters, fans and players alike knew they were witnessing the celebration of a legend who never forgot where she came from.

And now, the city that helped shape her will forever have a place in her story.
