While his on-base numbers are nothing special and he has a tendency to strike out, the numbers show he’s a real threat when the matchup’s right. Of his 69 career homers, 60 have come off right-handed pitchers, and this year, he’s boasting a career-best 125 wRC+ and a much-improved 19.4% strikeout rate against righties. That’s the lowest strikeout rate of his career, making this a promising trend.

He’s still struggling against lefties — with a bleak .178 batting average and .226 on-base mark — but that’s not a big concern for Houston. The Astros already rank second in MLB in OPS and wRC+ against lefties, and they’ve got enough right-handed hitters to protect Sánchez from southpaw arms.

Where Sánchez Fits in the Lineup

Chase Jaworsky, 21, is the top prospect of the group. He’s ranked as the No. 13 prospect in Houston’s system according to MLB Pipeline (and No. 22 by Baseball America). A speedy infielder with good range, Jaworsky has a utility-man future unless he improves his hitting approach.

Esmil Valencia, 19, didn’t crack Pipeline’s top 30, but FanGraphs likes him more, putting him at No. 20 in Houston’s rankings. He has raw talent and a potentially higher offensive upside, but scouts are concerned about his swing decisions.

The third piece, Ryan Gusto, 26, has already made his big-league debut and logged 86 innings over 24 games this year (14 starts). His 4.92 ERA might not turn heads, but his 3.92 SIERA suggests he’s been better than the surface numbers show. With injuries plaguing the Astros’ rotation early in the season, Gusto filled an important gap. But with Houston expecting to get several pitchers back from the IL, Gusto became a tradeable asset.
