Godzilla Minus One Sequel Could Arrive Sooner Than Expected

It’s looking like the King of the Monsters isn’t done stomping just yet. A fresh update has given fans something big to chew on. A sequel to Godzilla Minus One might actually hit theaters as early as next year. Yes, you read that right. After the massive success of the 2023 film, Toho seems eager to bring the beast back sooner rather than later.

Is Godzilla returning in 2026?

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Godzilla Minus One 2 is being eyed for a possible 2026 release. While Toho hasn’t officially locked in a date, the studio reportedly has the sequel deep in development. That’s a pretty big sign that things are moving fast behind the scenes.

What makes this even more exciting is that Takashi Yamazaki, the man behind the original film’s direction and screenplay, is returning. Fans praised Godzilla Minus One not just for its monster chaos, but for its emotional depth and postwar setting. Having Yamazaki back in the director’s chair pretty much guarantees the sequel won’t lose its soul.

Still, don’t expect major story details just yet. Toho is playing it close to the chest. We don’t know who from the original cast might return. We don’t even know where the story might pick up. But what we do know is that the team behind the first film is back, and that’s all many of us need to get hyped.

Where can you watch the first film again?

If you somehow missed Godzilla Minus One, or just want to rewatch it for the fifth time, it’s now streaming on Netflix. The film features a strong Japanese cast including Yunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, and Sakura Ando. The story drops us into postwar Japan, where a devastated nation faces an even bigger terror in the form of Godzilla. No military. No plan. Just raw survival.

While Yamazaki works on this sequel, he’s also juggling his first English-language film, Grandgear, with none other than J.J. Abrams on board as producer. That project, backed by Sony, still doesn’t have a release date either. So between that and the Godzilla sequel, Yamazaki clearly has a full plate.

Whether Godzilla Minus One 2 ends up arriving in 2026 or not, fans can at least rest easy knowing the next chapter is on the way. And this time, we might not have to wait too long.
