Mariska Hargitay Premieres ‘My Mom Jayne’ at Tribeca with Cher, Jamie Lee Curtis & SVU Cast

Mariska Hargitay brought together a room full of love, stardom, and personal history at the Tribeca Festival premiere of her directorial debut, My Mom Jayne. Held at the iconic Carnegie Hall, the event turned into more than just a film premiere. It was a celebration of a personal journey, and the stars showed up to support her.

Cher, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Liam Neeson were just a few of the big names who turned out for the evening. Alongside them were Hargitay’s Law & Order: SVU family, including Chris Meloni, Peter Scanavino, Ice-T, and Kelli Giddish. The bond between them was clear, and their support made the moment even more special.

Hargitay tells her mother’s story her way

My Mom Jayne dives into the life and legacy of Jayne Mansfield, Hargitay’s mother. Mansfield, a Hollywood icon and sex symbol of the 1950s and 60s, died in a tragic car crash when Mariska was just three. She was in the car with her brothers when it happened.

During the post-screening Q&A with Griffin Dunne, Hargitay spoke openly about the process of telling her mother’s story. She explained how it helped her heal from the emotional pain she carried for decades. “Has it been a bumpy road? Yes! And it’s fucking glorious now,” she said, to loud applause.

A few surprises and revelations

One of the biggest revelations in the film is that Hargitay’s biological father is not Mickey Hargitay, the well-known bodybuilder who was Mansfield’s husband. Instead, the film shares that Nelson Sardelli, a singer who had a romantic relationship with Mansfield, is her biological father. Sardelli was also present at the premiere and appeared visibly moved.

Hargitay said she knew this was her story to tell. “This story had not gotten out there and it was mine to tell,” she said. The documentary is deeply personal, mixing never-before-seen footage with raw emotion.

Jamie Lee Curtis shares a connection

Jamie Lee Curtis, who was also in attendance, spoke to Variety about the bond she shares with Hargitay. Both women are daughters of Hollywood legends and now lead powerhouse careers of their own. “We also share being women in our 60s in show business where we are active bosses,” Curtis said. “And we do it with a lot of joy and spirit.”

Hargitay launches Mighty Entertainment

The film is also the first project under Hargitay’s new production company, Mighty Entertainment. It includes both scripted and unscripted divisions. When asked if she would consider adapting My Mom Jayne into a scripted series or film, she smiled and said, “Oh, you’re giving me ideas, I didn’t even think about it.”

What’s next for the film

After its world premiere at Cannes in May, My Mom Jayne is set for a limited theatrical release on June 20. It will then air on HBO starting June 27. With the buzz surrounding the project and the emotional impact it’s already having, the film looks set to make a lasting mark.
