Jessie J is known for wearing her heart on her sleeve, and this week she did just that. The pop star took to Instagram on Tuesday to share that she’s been diagnosed with early breast cancer. In her post, she emphasized the word “early,” clinging to hope even while acknowledging how tough the situation is. “Cancer sucks in any form,” she wrote, “but I’m holding onto the word early.”

The 36-year-old singer said she’s been going through a whirlwind of medical tests over the last couple of months. The diagnosis came just before the release of her single “No Secrets” in late April, a song she had no idea would take on such a deeper meaning in light of her current reality.

Despite the diagnosis, Jessie J will go ahead with her performance at the Summertime Ball in London on June 15. But after that, she plans to step back from the spotlight and undergo surgery. “I’m going to disappear for a bit,” she told fans.
