Michael “Chicago Mike” Sumler of Kool & the Gang Dies in Atlanta Crash at 71

The music world is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Michael Sumler, a longtime member of Kool & the Gang. Known to fans and friends as “Chicago Mike,” Sumler was killed in a car accident on Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 71 years old.

According to reports, Sumler was driving on Veterans Memorial Highway near Buckner Road when he collided with another vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Local news outlets confirmed the details, and Newsweek was one of the first to report the heartbreaking news.

A Unique Journey Into Kool & the Gang

Sumler’s journey with Kool & the Gang began in a very different role. He didn’t start as a musician. He was originally brought in as a stylist and choreographer in the mid-1980s. Over time, he became much more than that. He began performing as an opener for the group and later stepped in to provide backup vocals.

His smooth energy and stage presence earned him a solid place in the lineup. Fans might not have known all the details of his behind-the-scenes work, but they recognized his style and voice as part of the group’s powerful live performances.

Tributes Pour In from the Music Community

Friends and musicians alike have come forward to honor Sumler’s memory. Adrian Meeks from Song Source Music Group told Fox 5 Atlanta that Sumler was always “jovial” and kind-hearted. He was the kind of person who made sure everyone around him felt good.

The iconic funk band Con Funk Shun also paid tribute. On X (formerly Twitter), they wrote, “We had no idea that Sunday night’s Love’s Train would be your last. Rest in heavenly peace.”

Kool & the Gang’s Legacy

Kool & the Gang formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, back in 1964. Over the decades, they carved out their place in music history, blending R&B, soul, funk, and disco. From “Jungle Boogie” to “Celebration,” their hits have defined generations.

The group has won two Grammy Awards and in 2024, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They also received an honorary star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Sumler may not have been an original member, but his contributions during his nearly four decades with the band helped shape their live shows and fan experiences. His presence will be missed by many, both on stage and off.
