‘My 600-Lb. Life’ Star Latonya Pottain Dies at 40 After Health Battle

Latonya Pottain, who appeared on season 11 of My 600-Lb. Life, has died at the age of 40. TMZ reports she passed away on May 17 at CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, after suffering cardiac arrest. Her brother told the outlet she was hospitalized after experiencing breathing problems. According to the Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office, the preliminary cause of death was congestive heart failure. A full autopsy is still pending.

Her Struggles After the Show

Latonya’s journey with weight and health challenges gained public attention in 2022 through the TLC show. At the time, she weighed 531 pounds and managed to lose 26 pounds while under the care of Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, a well-known bariatric surgeon. However, her progress stalled after filming ended.

In February 2025, Latonya started a GoFundMe page where she spoke openly about her physical and emotional struggles. She revealed that she had become bedridden since June 2024 and weighed around 705 pounds. Her condition had worsened to the point where EMTs told her she couldn’t be transported safely to the hospital due to fire hazard concerns.

Latonya said the public backlash from being on television caused her mental health to decline. She fell into depression and became fearful of pursuing the surgery she once hoped would change her life. Her condition was further complicated by severe sciatica that left her in constant pain and unable to move.

A Heartbreaking End to a Difficult Journey

Latonya’s story was one of both struggle and resilience. Despite the setbacks, she still hoped to get treatment and pleaded for help with medical transportation. In her own words, she said, “I truly want to fight for my health and my life.”

Her time on My 600-Lb. Life was a window into the harsh reality that many people face while battling obesity and related health conditions. Dr. Nowzaradan had warned her during the show that her heart was in danger, urging her to commit to the weight loss program.

Sadly, Latonya’s journey came to an end far too soon. Her passing is a reminder of the toll that extreme obesity can take on the body and the importance of compassionate care for those dealing with it.
