Victorian Athlete Jemma Stapleton, 25, Dies in Thailand Accident During Family Holiday
The Australian athletics world is grieving after the sudden death of 25-year-old sprinter Jemma Stapleton, who tragically passed away while on a family holiday overseas.
Stapleton died in Thailand, though details of the tragedy, including where the family was holidaying, have not been fully disclosed by all outlets, and the circumstances and cause of death have not been officially released.
Stapleton placed third in last year’s Stawell Gift final, Australia’s richest short-distance sprint competition. She had beaten 2022 winner and Australian representative Carla Bull as a frontrunner in the semi-finals, with commentator Tamsyn Manou praising her performance on the day.
Her result in 2025 marked a breakthrough moment for the Knox junior, who had been racing since childhood and was pushing toward a professional career on the track.
Family and Sporting Community Pour Out Tributes
Her younger brother Joel described his sister as someone with “a heart of gold, always putting others before herself,” adding that her smile was infectious and could brighten even the darkest day. He said her death has left “a hole in my heart.”
Stapleton’s partner, Tyler, said he could not put into words the hurt he was feeling, describing her as “the single greatest thing to happen to me” and expressing gratitude for the love they shared.
Athletics coach Scott Rowsell described Stapleton as “a beautiful, bright and warm personality who was always smiling,” saying her presence lifted every environment she stepped into.
Knox Little Athletics said it was deeply saddened by her passing, noting that from an early age she showed great talent, determination, and a genuine love for athletics, achieving success at the Knox Championship level and later representing Knox at the state level.
The Rowville Netball Club, where Stapleton was also a member, said the loss of someone so young was simply unimaginable, adding that there are no words that can truly ease the pain being felt by those who loved her.
Fundraiser Surges Past $88,000 in Under 24 Hours
A friend of the family started a GoFundMe to help bring Jemma’s body home, with the fundraising page set up and approved by the family to help ease financial pressure so they can grieve together. The fundraiser raised more than $88,000 of a $100,000 target in under 24 hours.
After her third-place result in the 2025 final, Stapleton returned to Stawell in 2026 and made it to another semi-final, a testament to the continued growth of a career cut tragically short.
