Centerville, Ohio Young Lacrosse Player, Mara Rowton, Passes Away; Candlelight Vigil Held at Robert F. Mays Park
The Centerville, Ohio, community came together in shared sorrow this week following the passing of Mara Rowton, a young member of the Centerville Youth Lacrosse program whose death has sent waves of grief through the Dayton area and beyond.
On the evening of Wednesday, June 10, friends, teammates, coaches, and families gathered at Robert F. Mays Park for a candlelight vigil organized in her honor, standing together on the same lacrosse field where Mara had left her mark.
The vigil, called together by Centerville Youth Lacrosse, drew an outpouring of love from across the tight-knit community. Players arrived wearing their jerseys, while parents and supporters donned their Elk gear as a unified show of solidarity for the Rowton family.
Candles were held high in the summer night air, each one a quiet symbol of hope, remembrance, and the enduring bond between those who shared in Mara’s world.
“Let’s show up for the Rowton Family and remind them that they are not alone,” read the message shared by the organization ahead of the gathering. “Your presence and support will mean more than words can express.”
Those words resonated deeply with the hundreds who answered the call. The field, which had once been a place of competition and youthful energy, became a sanctuary for collective mourning. Parents stood beside children, coaches beside players, and strangers beside neighbors, all brought together by the loss of one young girl whose impact reached far beyond what her years might suggest.
Community member Jenna Hall, who helped amplify the vigil notice, described Mara simply as a “beautiful, sweet girl,” urging those who could not attend in person to hold the family in their thoughts and prayers.
That sentiment was echoed by parent Merry Jackson, who shared that her own daughter had been talking about Mara since learning of her passing the night before.
“She has been sharing her stories of this child,” Jackson wrote. “Please let me know if there is anything we can do.”
Those who knew Mara describe her as someone whose presence elevated everyone around her. She was not simply a lacrosse player but a genuine and caring person who made teammates feel seen, welcomed, and supported.
Her positive energy was felt at every practice and game, and the loss of that spirit has left a void within the program that will not easily be filled.
A Legacy That Outlasts the Field
Youth sports communities are built on more than scores and standings. They are built on the relationships formed during early morning practices, long drives to tournaments, and the kind of bonds that form when young people push themselves together toward a common goal.
Mara Rowton was a central thread in that fabric for Centerville Youth Lacrosse, and her absence has reminded everyone just how much a single person can mean to a community.
As the Rowton family navigates the unimaginable grief of losing their daughter, the message from Centerville is clear: they will not walk through it alone.
The candles lit at Robert F. Mays Park on June 10 may have burned out by morning, but the love and loyalty behind them will carry on far longer.
