In the days following Lydia’s death, members of the community organized opportunities for friends and neighbors to gather, reflect, and grieve together.
According to a public announcement shared by family friend Delana Crosby, the sanctuary at Calvary Baptist Church in Meggett, South Carolina, was opened to the public on Sunday, June 7, allowing people to spend time in prayer and remembrance. The church welcomed anyone wishing to pay their respects and mourn the loss of the young girl.
Messages of sympathy quickly appeared online. Friends and community members expressed their condolences, offered prayers, and shared memories of Lydia. Many described the situation as heartbreaking and unimaginable for her family.

Fundraiser Launched to Support Lydia’s Family
A GoFundMe campaign titled “Support for Nicole Wilson & Lydia Woods” was established to assist Lydia’s mother, Nicole Wilson, with funeral expenses and other unexpected costs resulting from the tragedy. The fundraiser was created by May Yeates, who identified herself as Lydia’s varsity volleyball coach and a fellow parent.
In the campaign description, Yeates described Lydia as a bright and talented student at LLCS who excelled both academically and athletically. She noted that Lydia was known for her dedication in the classroom and on the volleyball court, where she brought enthusiasm, kindness, and team spirit to those around her.

The fundraiser also highlighted Nicole Wilson’s longstanding support of the volleyball program and the local community. Organizers expressed hope that donations would help ease the financial burden facing the family during an extraordinarily difficult time. As of the latest update, the campaign had raised more than $17,000 from over 150 donors.
Additional tributes continued to emerge online. One community member recalled meeting Lydia the previous year and described her as a “little ball of energy.” Others spoke about the positive influence she had within the volleyball community and encouraged continued prayers for her family and friends.
