Why Did Will Johnson Fall in the Draft?

Will Johnson was once seen as a top 5 pick in the NFL Draft. From the moment he joined the University of Michigan, scouts believed he had everything it takes to be a first-round star. But now, things have changed.

On the first night of the 2025 NFL Draft, Will Johnson’s name was not called. Instead of walking across the stage to shake hands with the commissioner, Johnson will now have to wait until Day 2 to learn his NFL future.

Why Did Will Johnson Fall in the Draft?

The main reason for his fall? A knee issue. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, some NFL teams were worried about Johnson’s health. The injury happened during the 2024 season and seemed to affect his performance.

While the full details aren’t public, the concern was enough to scare off teams. Even though Johnson had the talent of a first-round pick, the injury pushed him out of the top 32 selections.

A Star at Michigan

Despite the injury, Will Johnson had a great career at Michigan. He played cornerback and quickly became one of the best defenders in the country. Let’s take a look at some of his top college accomplishments:

  • Two-time All-American
    • First team in 2023
    • Second team in 2024
  • Two-time All-Big Ten selection
    • First team by coaches and media in 2023
    • Second team (media) and honorable mention (coaches) in 2024
  • Jim Thorpe Award Semifinalist (2024)
  • Defensive MVP of the 2023 National Championship Game
  • Shared Defensive Freshman of the Year honors (2022)
  • Three-time letter winner
  • Played in 32 games, started 22
  • Set Michigan’s record with his third pick-six — a 42-yard touchdown vs. USC

Will Johnson was a big part of Michigan’s success. His skills, speed, and football smarts made him a favorite with fans and coaches.

Injuries Happen, But Talent Stays

Injuries are a part of football. Sometimes, great players fall in the draft because of health concerns. But it doesn’t mean their careers are over. In fact, many stars started slow and still became legends.

Will Johnson still has the tools to be a top player. He reads the game well. He makes big plays. He’s tough and disciplined. With time and healing, he can prove that his injury won’t stop his career.
