Where Is Rex Heuermann Now in 2025? Gilgo Beach Case Updates & Trial Status Explained

Where is Rex Heuermann now in 2025? The gripping conclusion of Netflix’s Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer has reignited public curiosity about the current status of the man accused of terrorizing New York’s South Shore for over a decade. With chilling new evidence, additional charges, and more victims possibly tied to the case, all eyes are on Rex Heuermann as the investigation and legal process continue to evolve.

Here is where Rex Heuermann is now and what we know so far.

Where is Rex Heuermann now in 2025?

As of 2025, Rex Heuermann is being held without bail at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in New York, awaiting trial for multiple murder charges.

Heuermann remains in custody after being charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes — known as the “Gilgo Four.” In late 2024 and early 2025, prosecutors added three more murder charges to his case, citing new forensic evidence and connections to previously unsolved cases.

The case has expanded significantly since his July 2023 arrest, and authorities now believe Heuermann may be linked to additional disappearances and homicides still under investigation.

What led to Rex Heuermann’s arrest?

Heuermann was arrested after a multi-agency investigation linked him to the murders using DNA evidence, burner phone tracking, and vehicle identification.

The investigation gained momentum when his Chevrolet Avalanche matched witness descriptions from the time of the murders. Authorities traced burner phone activity near both his home in Massapequa Park and office in Manhattan. Surveillance also caught him topping up minutes on a burner phone — the same type used to contact some of the victims.

A major breakthrough came when DNA from a discarded pizza crust Heuermann had eaten was matched to a hair found on one of the victims, sealed in burlap. That discovery was the forensic confirmation investigators needed to make their move.

Is the trial for Rex Heuermann underway?

No, Rex Heuermann’s trial has been delayed multiple times and is now expected to begin in late 2025.

Prosecutors have cited the massive volume of digital and forensic evidence as a primary reason for the delay. The defense has also requested additional time due to the complexity and public nature of the case. Jury selection is tentatively scheduled for the fall, but further postponements remain possible.

With additional charges now filed and new potential victims being investigated, the scope of the trial may expand even further before it begins.

How did corruption slow the investigation?

The Gone Girls docuseries reveals that early investigation efforts were hampered by corruption within Suffolk County law enforcement.

Former police chief James Burke and former district attorney Tom Spota—both later convicted of obstruction and corruption-related offenses—are accused of stalling progress, limiting cooperation with the FBI, and turning the investigation inward to protect their own interests.

Director Liz Garbus, in reflecting on the investigation, said: “I think Suffolk County under police chief Jimmy Burke and DA Tom Spota was run like a crime syndicate.” Their interference may have delayed the capture of Heuermann by several years.

Will more victims be linked to Rex Heuermann?

It’s highly possible. As of 2025, investigators are reviewing a number of unsolved cases to determine if they are connected to Heuermann.

With mounting evidence and public pressure, authorities are keeping the case open and continuing to follow new leads. Gone Girls director Liz Garbus noted that even after filming ended, new victims were being added to Heuermann’s docket—highlighting that this is still very much a developing case.
