Where Is Kendra Licari Now? Netflix’s ‘Unknown Number’ Reveals the Shocking Truth
When two teens in Beal City, Michigan started receiving terrifying, anonymous messages in 2021, no one could’ve imagined the person behind them would turn out to be so close — one victim’s own mother. Now, thanks to Netflix’s latest true-crime documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, viewers are finally getting answers about what really happened and where Kendra Licari is today.
The Shocking Case That Stunned a Small Town
The twisted story centers around Lauryn Licari, a high school student who began receiving relentless, cruel texts and social media messages starting in September 2021. The harassment campaign lasted for months and targeted Lauryn and another teen — with no clue who the tormentor was.
The town was horrified when investigators revealed the person behind the messages was Lauryn’s mother, Kendra Licari. Even more shocking was her motive: to allegedly gain sympathy and attention after a breakup with her daughter’s father.
Kendra Licari’s Confession and Sentencing
According to court documents and reporting by The Morning Sun, Kendra made a full confession after her arrest. In March 2023, she pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor. Prosecutors agreed to drop other charges, including obstruction of justice and using a computer to commit a crime.
At her sentencing in April 2023, Judge Mark Duthie didn’t hold back, calling the case “truly horrible” and saying it showed him “the worst in human nature.” He added,
“I can’t imagine any parent saying such horrible things to her own daughter.”
An emotional Kendra told the court she was “ashamed, remorseful and embarrassed,” and wished she could take back her actions. Her defense lawyer revealed she had begun therapy, parenting classes, and had been diagnosed with a mental illness following a psychiatric evaluation.
How Long Was She in Prison?
Kendra Licari was sentenced to a minimum of 19 months (1 year and 7 months), with a maximum sentence of 5 years, per Michigan Department of Corrections records. After serving part of her time, she was released on parole on August 8, 2024.
She will remain under parole supervision until February 2026, according to official prison records. As of now, she continues to live in Michigan.
What Happens With Her Daughter Lauryn Now?
The Netflix documentary features interviews with both Kendra and her daughter Lauryn, offering a rare and emotional look into the aftermath of the abuse. Kendra admits she’s “very disappointed” in herself.
As part of her plea deal, Kendra is currently not allowed to contact her daughter. In the documentary, Lauryn reflects on their relationship, saying:
“I think I want to trust her now, but I don’t think I can. Now that she’s out, I just want her to get the help she needs… so when we see each other, it doesn’t go back to the old ways.”
What’s Next?
Kendra Licari is out of prison but far from free. Her parole means strict supervision for over a year and an uncertain path to reconciliation with her daughter. Meanwhile, Lauryn continues to heal from the betrayal that shocked not just their town — but the entire nation.
