During a recent YouTube livestream on Monday, May 19, Adams opened up about his battle with terminal prostate cancer. The 67-year-old cartoonist shared that the disease has already spread to his bones and that he expects to pass away sometime this summer.
For longtime fans and followers of Adams, this news came as a shock. But for him, it’s something he has been quietly living with for a while.
“I have the same cancer that Joe Biden has,” Adams said during the livestream. “I also have prostate cancer that has also spread to my bones. So, my life expectancy is, maybe this summer.”

“Every day is a nightmare”

“The disease is already intolerable,” he said. “I can tell you that I don’t have good days. If you’re wondering, ‘Hey Scott, do you have any good days?’ Nope. Every day is a nightmare and evening is even worse.”
He shared that the pain moves around his body, making each moment physically agonizing. Still, he remains clear-minded and deeply reflective, which has allowed him time to process everything.
“It just sort of is what it is,” Adams said. “I have to say that everybody has to die, as far as I know.”
Despite the heavy weight of his diagnosis, Adams offered some perspective that many might find unexpectedly comforting. He explained that knowing his time is limited has given him the rare opportunity to get his affairs in order, say his goodbyes, and reflect on life.
“If you had to pick a way to die, this one’s really painful — really, really painful — but it’s also kind of good that it gives you enough time while your brain is still working to wrap things up.”

Scott Adams rose to fame as the creator of Dilbert, a comic strip that first appeared in 1989 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The strip humorously captured the absurdities of corporate life, earning syndication in hundreds of newspapers across the country, including The Washington Post.
However, Adams has also made headlines for controversial reasons. In April 2023, many newspapers dropped Dilbert after he made racially charged remarks on his YouTube channel. The backlash was swift, and it marked a significant turning point in his public image and professional career.
Still, regardless of past controversies, Adams’ fans have expressed sympathy and support in response to his cancer announcement.
Biden’s Diagnosis and Shared Struggle
Interestingly, Adams shared his cancer news just one day after former President Joe Biden’s office publicly revealed that Biden, too, had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The announcement said Biden has an “aggressive” form of the disease that has also spread to his bones.
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” the statement from Biden’s team read. “On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”
According to the statement, Biden’s cancer is considered hormone-sensitive, which may allow for more effective treatment options. His family, including First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, is currently reviewing treatment plans.
Adams expressed a sense of solidarity with Biden, given that they’re now both facing the same aggressive illness.
