What Happened to Nelsy Cruz? Dominican Governor and Sister of Nelson Cruz Dies in Tragic Nightclub Collapse

A wave of shock and grief has swept across the Dominican Republic and beyond following the tragic death of Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province and sister of former MLB star Nelson Cruz. Nelsy was among the victims of a catastrophic roof collapse at the popular Jet Set nightclub in the early hours of April 8, 2025.

Here’s a look at the heartbreaking events that led to her passing, the unfolding investigation, and the legacy she leaves behind.

Nelsy Cruz Dies in Jet Set Nightclub Collapse

Nelsy Cruz was confirmed dead following the collapse of the roof at Jet Set, a well-known nightclub in the capital, Santo Domingo. The devastating incident occurred just after 1 a.m. and claimed at least 44 lives while injuring more than 150 others, according to reports by the BBC, The Guardian, and the Associated Press.

In a chilling moment, Nelsy reportedly managed to call Dominican President Luis Abinader at 12:49 a.m. to say she was trapped beneath the debris. First Lady Raquel Arbaje shared this heartbreaking detail with reporters, saying, “This is too great a tragedy.”

Despite being rescued from the wreckage, Nelsy later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital, the AP confirmed.

Family Statement: A Loss Felt Deeply

Her brother Nelson Cruz, a beloved former MLB player, confirmed her passing in a heartfelt Instagram Story post. The family also released a public statement mourning the loss:

“With deep sorrow, the Cruz Martinez family reports the sensitive death of our beloved sister, mother, daughter, aunt, and friend, Nelsy M. Cruz Martinez, who in life performed with dedication, commitment and love for her people and her community.”

The funeral was held later that Tuesday, following a public memorial service. The outpouring of condolences from political leaders, citizens, and fans of her brother alike served as a powerful reminder of how deeply Nelsy was loved and respected.

Nelsy Cruz: A Public Servant with Heart

Nelsy Cruz was not only the sister of a baseball legend—she was a respected leader in her own right. As governor of Montecristi province in the northwestern Dominican Republic, she was known for her hands-on approach to governance and a genuine passion for community welfare. Her colleagues and constituents often praised her for her warmth, accessibility, and drive to improve the lives of those in her province.

She had worked tirelessly on initiatives to boost local development, improve education, and empower women in rural communities. Her tragic and sudden death has left a void in Dominican politics and public service.

Nightclub Collapse: Ongoing Rescue and Investigation

The Jet Set nightclub collapse is now one of the deadliest structural disasters in the nation’s recent memory. Rescue operations continued for over 12 hours after the incident, with emergency crews working through the rubble in orange safety suits, according to photographs shared by the Associated Press.

Among the other victims was Octavio Dotel, a former MLB pitcher who had been pulled from the rubble alive but died en route to the hospital. He was 51.

Reports from La Nación also confirmed that former MLB player Esteban Germán had been at the venue earlier that night but left shortly before the roof caved in. He later confirmed he was safe and posted footage of the live band that had been playing just before the incident occurred.

Mayor Carolina Mejía de Garrigó shared on social media that rescue efforts were still “active” and emphasized unity and prayer during this national emergency.

A Nation in Mourning

The Dominican Republic has been plunged into grief over the deaths of prominent figures like Nelsy Cruz and Octavio Dotel, as well as dozens of others whose names are still emerging. Government officials have vowed to launch a full investigation into the building’s structural integrity and the cause of the collapse.

As the Cruz family continues to mourn, Nelson Cruz thanked those who reached out in solidarity:

“Her legacy of service and love for others will live forever in our hearts.”

Remembering Nelsy Cruz

Nelsy Cruz will be remembered not only as the sister of a sports legend but as a compassionate public servant and advocate for her community. Her leadership, kindness, and tireless commitment to the people of Montecristi earned her widespread admiration.

Her sudden passing has left the nation in mourning—but also united in honoring the impact she made in her life.

Rest in peace, Nelsy Cruz. Your voice, your heart, and your service will never be forgotten.
