Harris Yulin, known for his powerful presence in both theater and film, has passed away at the age of 87. He died on June 10 in New York City from cardiac arrest, as confirmed by his manager Sue Leibman. With a career that spanned decades, Yulin made a name for himself across Broadway, television, and major Hollywood films.
Theater roots and legacy
Yulin was deeply rooted in the world of theater. He played Hamlet three different times off-Broadway and starred in major productions like Hedda Gabler, The Price, and The Visit on Broadway. His stage performances were often praised for their depth and command. He also spent eight years teaching at the prestigious Juilliard School, mentoring the next generation of actors.
Even late into his life, he remained active in the creative world. He had been collaborating on new projects with fellow actor and longtime friend Stacy Keach before his passing.
Famous film moments
Movie fans may remember him best from Ghostbusters II. He played the judge who accidentally unleashes ghosts in the famous courtroom scene. That role, while small, became iconic thanks to Yulin’s intense performance and the chaos that followed in the scene.
He also appeared in major films like Scarface, Clear and Present Danger, Multiplicity, and Training Day, bringing his commanding presence to every role.
TV appearances and praise
Yulin earned an Emmy nomination in 1996 for his guest role on Frasier. Over the years, he also popped up in hit series like Ozark, Veep, Billions, Divorce, and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Most recently, he had been preparing to film a new series called American Classic alongside Laura Linney and Kevin Kline.
The director of that show, Michael Hoffman, called Yulin “one of the greatest artists I have ever encountered.” He also described Yulin as a man full of grace, humility, and generosity.
Family and loved ones
Yulin is survived by his wife Kristen Lowman, a son-in-law, a nephew, and several godchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, actress Claire Lucido.
