Tilden High School Junior Pedro Ramirez, 17, Shot Dead Walking to School in Chicago’s Back of the Yards
A 17-year-old honor roll student was gunned down Tuesday morning while walking to school on Chicago’s Southwest Side, leaving his family, classmates, and girlfriend devastated and searching for answers in the aftermath of a senseless act of violence.
Pedro Ramirez, a junior at Tilden High School, was shot multiple times around 7:40 a.m. in the 5000 block of South Throop Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
He was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Two other men, aged 55 and 61, were also struck by gunfire and remain in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.
According to Chicago police, a dark-colored SUV pulled up near the victims, and three gunmen dressed in all black stepped out and opened fire.
Exclusive video obtained by WGN News captured the moment the attackers exited the vehicle before at least one of them began shooting.
The two men who were also shot drove themselves to the 5000 block of South Ashland Avenue before receiving medical attention. Officers later chased down suspects a few blocks from the scene, and a person of interest is now in custody, police confirmed Wednesday.
A Life Defined by Dedication and Promise
Those who knew Pedro described a young man who lived with extraordinary purpose. He was a straight-A student on the honor roll, beloved by coaches, teachers, and classmates alike. His family said he played both soccer and volleyball and had no gang affiliation whatsoever.
His best friend, Mario Rosales, recalled something Pedro once told him that now carries unbearable weight.
“He always said, ‘I will never miss school unless I’m very sick, or unless I’m dying,'” Rosales said. “He actually died, so it really hurts my heart about those words that he said now.”
Pedro’s girlfriend, Adelynn Peña, struggled to process the loss.
“One point, you’re just talking, and then from another, he’s just gone,” she said. “It is very hard to just put that in your mind that you’re never going to see him again.”
Pedro’s stepmother, Eloisa Garcia, shared that his mother, Azucena Velazquez, had raised him alone after his father died when Pedro was just a few months old. Garcia entered his life when he was 10 years old.
A woman who described herself as Pedro’s second mother told WGN News he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Pedro had turned 17 on December 16 and had his entire future ahead of him.
Community Mourns as Investigation Continues
A small memorial has been growing near the scene of the shooting as neighbors and schoolmates come to pay their respects.
Chicago Public Schools released a statement expressing grief over the loss.
“All of us at Chicago Public Schools are saddened to learn of the loss of this young person’s life and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, school and community members impacted by this tragedy.”
The district said support services would be made available to students and staff at Tilden High School.
Area detectives continue to investigate what led to the shooting and whether the victims were specifically targeted. No formal arrests have been announced beyond the person of interest in custody.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Pedro’s family during this devastating time.
