The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 6 Ending Explained: Joel’s Choice and Ellie’s Truth Revealed

If you thought the emotional gut-punches were over after The Last of Us Season 1, think again. Season 2, Episode 6 takes a hard look at the past—revealing why Ellie’s heart turned cold, what really happened between Joel and Eugene, and how the truth finally caught up with them both. It’s not just another flashback episode. It’s the one that redefines everything we thought we knew about Joel and Ellie.

So what actually happened in this haunting hour of HBO’s post-apocalyptic masterpiece? Let’s break it all down.

Back in Time: A Different Kind of Birthday

Unlike previous episodes that charge ahead in time, this one hits rewind. It’s Ellie’s 19th birthday, and Joel gives her something more symbolic than any cake or gift: her first official patrol. On the surface, it looks like a bonding moment, but in classic The Last of Us fashion, things take a tragic turn.

While out on patrol, Joel and Ellie stumble upon their friend Eugene, who’s in the middle of a fight with an Infected. Eugene survives, but not without a bite. He’s doomed. Still, Eugene has one final request: let him walk back to Jackson and say goodbye to his wife, Gail. He promises he’ll let Joel end things if he turns before then.

Joel reluctantly agrees—or at least pretends to. But the second Ellie leaves to grab their horses, Joel walks Eugene to a scenic lake and kills him.

Joel’s Choice, Ellie’s Betrayal

When Ellie returns and sees Eugene’s body, she’s furious. Joel brushes it off with a mumbled “Sorry,” like that makes it all okay. But it doesn’t. Not for Ellie. And not for Gail.

Back in Jackson, Joel lies to Gail about Eugene’s final moments. He tells her Eugene went out peacefully. Ellie, unable to stomach the lie, tells Gail the truth. She exposes Joel’s betrayal—of Eugene, of Gail, and of her.

“You swore,” she says bitterly, referencing his earlier promise to try and get Eugene home. And with that, the wedge between them grows even deeper.

This is Why Ellie Was Cold in Episode 1

All the distance and tension between Joel and Ellie at the beginning of Season 2? Yeah, it wasn’t just teenage angst. It was grief and betrayal. Now we know Eugene’s death is the ghost haunting their relationship.

It’s also why Gail can’t even look Joel in the eye when we meet her in Episode 1. She doesn’t blame him for putting Eugene down. She blames him for robbing her of the goodbye she was owed. And she blames Ellie, at first, for helping Joel lie. That’s why Gail’s so standoffish with both of them.

But it doesn’t stop there.

When Did Ellie Learn About Salt Lake City?

This episode gives us something the video game didn’t: the exact moment Ellie confronts Joel about the Fireflies. After the New Year’s party, Ellie confronts him on the porch and forces the truth out of him.

“You had that same look,” she says, referring to when he lied about Eugene. “So tell me what really happened.”

Joel breaks. His eyes well up as he confirms it all. There were no raiders. Ellie was the only immune person. The Fireflies were going to kill her to make a cure. And he stopped them all.

“I saved you,” he says.

“I was supposed to die,” she snaps back. “You took that from me.”

It’s a brutal moment. One that reshapes Ellie’s whole identity. Her survival came at the cost of countless others. She never got the chance to choose.

But Joel doesn’t apologize. He says he’d do it again. Because he loves her. Because she’s the only thing in this world that matters to him.

That confession doesn’t fix things. But it plants a seed. Ellie says she can’t forgive him yet—but maybe one day, she’ll try. It’s the tiniest glimmer of hope in a story soaked in sorrow.

How Episode 6 Changes the Game

In the original The Last of Us Part II game, Ellie discovers Joel’s lie over time. Through subtle clues. Through haunted flashbacks. The show takes a different route. It gives us a direct confrontation. It allows Joel to tell the truth face-to-face, which makes the emotional payoff hit harder.

And it explains why Ellie was distant but still went on patrol with him in Episode 2. She wanted to forgive him. She wanted to move on. She just didn’t know how.

Back in Seattle: Ellie’s Journey Continues

The episode ends in the present, with Ellie returning to the theater she’s been sharing with Dina. But she’s not the same person anymore. She’s carrying the weight of everything Joel did for her—and everything he took from her.

This isn’t just a story about survival anymore. It’s a story about grief. About love twisted by desperation. About the fine line between doing what’s right and doing what’s necessary.

Joel didn’t just kill Eugene. He broke Ellie’s trust.
