The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: Horror, Heartbreak & the Rise of Isaac

The Last of Us has never shied away from showing the brutal side of humanity—but Season 2, Episode 4 takes it to another level. This chapter is a tense, emotional, and sometimes terrifying ride through post-apocalyptic Seattle, offering the best mix of horror and heart the season has delivered so far.

It introduces us to a key new character, brings back the infected in all their gory glory, and gives Ellie and Dina’s relationship its most powerful moment yet. Let’s break down what made this episode so strong.

Who is Isaac and Why Does He Matter?

Fans of the game will know him. But for many watching the show, Isaac was still a bit of a mystery—until now. Played once again by the brilliant Jeffrey Wright, Isaac is the leader of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), and this episode finally gives him the time and presence he deserves.

His introduction is brutal: we see him turn against FEDRA and lead an explosive defection to the WLF. It’s cold, calculated, and unnerving. And that’s just the beginning. Fast-forward 11 years, and we find him running the WLF with an iron grip.

In a disturbing torture scene, we see just how far Isaac has fallen—or risen, depending on how you look at it. His quiet, eerie conversation about saucepans with a Seraphite prisoner feels almost Hannibal-like. He’s not just hurting people—he’s toying with them. This isn’t just about war. It’s about dominance. Power. Control. Isaac has embraced the apocalypse—and found his throne in the chaos.

How Does Seattle Turn Into a Warzone?

“What the f*ck is wrong with Seattle?” Dina’s question hits home. As Ellie and Dina move through the crumbling city, they’re met with violence, decay, and twisted remnants of once-normal places.

The standout moment? A horrifying scene in an abandoned TV station. The girls stumble upon five WLF soldiers hanged and disemboweled—a message from the Seraphites. The image is disgusting, powerful, and deeply unsettling. This isn’t just about survival anymore. This is a holy war, and both sides are drowning in blood.

And yet, as awful as the infected are, the episode keeps reminding us—humans are still the worst monsters here.

What About the Infected?

They’re back—and scarier than ever.

The underground sequence is classic Last of Us: claustrophobic, intense, and packed with danger. As Ellie and Dina try to make their way through a collapsed subway, they’re suddenly attacked by clickers and runners. It’s dark, fast, and brutal. You can feel the panic in every shaky flashlight beam and desperate breath.

Both Bella Ramsey (Ellie) and Isabela Merced (Dina) absolutely sell the moment. The fear feels real. But the real emotional punch lands just after—when Ellie gets bitten again, this time to protect Dina.

It’s a moment of self-sacrifice, and one that mirrors the player’s experience in the game. Ellie has already accepted what she is. Now she’s willing to risk being discovered just to keep the person she loves safe.

How Does Ellie and Dina’s Bond Deepen?

Between the horror and action, this episode makes space for quiet, beautiful moments.

The best example? Ellie softly singing “Take On Me” to Dina in a room full of light and broken walls. It’s a callback to the game’s optional moments, but here, it feels vital. It’s warm, tender, and filled with unspoken love.

Later, the emotional weight doubles as Ellie takes that bite for Dina. It’s not just bravery—it’s devotion. The tension peaks when Dina has to decide whether Ellie’s been infected, holding a gun and tears at the same time. It’s a brutal yet beautiful sequence, ending in a tearful release and mutual understanding.

By the final scene, the two are hand-in-hand, ready to face the world together. “Together.” That one word replaces Joel’s “OK” from Season 1, closing the episode on a hopeful note—even as the world around them falls apart.

Is This the Best Episode Yet?

Without a doubt, Episode 4 is a high point for Season 2.

Director Kate Herron juggles shifting tones with ease—one minute you’re cringing at a torture scene, the next you’re crying during a love song. The writing, acting, and atmosphere come together in a way that only The Last of Us can pull off.

With Isaac stepping into the spotlight, the infected reemerging, and Ellie and Dina’s bond growing stronger by the minute, this episode reminds us why this show stands out: it balances terror and tenderness in equal measure.

Seattle might be hell on earth, but love—real, raw, and hard-earned—still survives in the ashes.

Verdict: A haunting, emotional, and unforgettable chapter that sets a new bar for Season 2.
