SpaceX Starship Explodes During Test at Texas Starbase, No Injuries Reported
A routine test at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas turned chaotic late Wednesday night when a Starship rocket exploded on the test stand. The blast lit up the night sky just after 11 p.m. local time, captured in real-time by live stream footage. A massive fireball shot upwards as the rocket suffered what SpaceX called “a major anomaly.”
Despite the dramatic visuals, the company confirmed that everyone on-site was safe. A secure perimeter was already in place around the facility. Local authorities later described the event as a “catastrophic failure,” and said that an official investigation is underway.
Starship’s Unpredictable Journey Continues
This isn’t the first time Starship has seen explosive outcomes. 2024 has already seen three fiery launch attempts that ended in destruction. Even with a few successful takeoffs, the rocket’s reliability is still a big concern.
Starship is massive. When stacked with the Super Heavy booster, it stands nearly 400 feet tall. That kind of scale brings technical challenges, especially for tasks like orbital refueling and long-distance missions.
Big Plans, Bigger Expectations
Elon Musk is betting heavily on Starship. The rocket is a key part of NASA’s future Artemis missions, which aim to land humans on the Moon again in 2027 and 2028. It’s also central to launching Starlab, a private space station that will eventually replace the ISS after 2030.
Musk also has plans for Mars. He wants to send Optimus robots to the red planet by 2026. If all goes well, he says humans might follow as early as 2029. Realistically, 2031 seems more likely. But after another explosion, even those timelines may need another look.
