Soulja Boy Arrested in Los Angeles for Alleged Gun Possession During Traffic Stop

Rapper Soulja Boy was arrested early Sunday morning in Los Angeles after police say he was caught with a firearm during a traffic stop. The 35-year-old artist, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was taken into custody around 2:50 a.m., according to the LAPD.

Police say the stop occurred near the intersection of Melrose and Genesee avenues around 2:35 a.m. Officers reportedly detained a passenger in the vehicle and arrested Way for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm — a charge that carries felony weight.

As of now, it remains unclear whether he has been released or where he is currently being held. Soulja Boy has not yet responded to media requests for comment.

Legal Troubles Piling Up

This latest arrest is another chapter in a string of legal issues for the rapper. Earlier this year, he was found liable in a civil case involving a former assistant who accused him of sexual assault, physical abuse, and emotional trauma. A California jury awarded the woman $4 million in damages after a three-week trial.

At the time, Way’s attorney, Rickey Ivie, pushed back against the verdict, claiming it was based on cultural bias rather than facts. “Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case,” Ivie said.

From Billboard No. 1 to Courtrooms

Soulja Boy first gained fame in 2007 with his viral hit “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” which shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped usher in the era of dance-centric, internet-fueled rap music. Since then, he’s maintained a strong presence online, but his music career has often been overshadowed by personal controversies and run-ins with the law.

This new arrest could lead to serious consequences, especially given his previous felony conviction. It’s not the first time Way has been in trouble for firearms. In 2014, he was briefly jailed for gun possession, and in 2019, he was sentenced to jail time after violating probation by having ammunition in his home.

What’s Next?

It’s unclear what the next steps will be for Soulja Boy following this latest arrest. If formally charged and convicted, the consequences could significantly impact both his freedom and career.

For now, fans and observers alike are waiting for more details — and a statement — from the rapper or his legal team.
