Sally Ride’s 27-Year Love Story Revealed in Nat Geo Documentary by Tam O’Shaughnessy

Most people know Sally Ride as the first American woman to fly into space. But a new documentary is showing the world a more personal side of the astronaut. Sally, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, dives into her 27-year relationship with life partner Tam O’Shaughnessy. The film will air on Nat Geo on June 16 and stream on Disney+ starting June 17.

A Love Kept Quiet for Decades

Tam O’Shaughnessy met Sally Ride when they were kids. What started as a friendship turned into a romance in 1985. But their love story stayed mostly private. Close friends and family knew, and some people guessed, but it was never something they spoke about publicly.

That changed shortly before Sally passed away in 2012. She had been battling pancreatic cancer and knew her time was limited. Just ten days before her death, Tam asked her what she should say to the public. She was planning a celebration of Sally’s life and a national tribute in Washington, D.C. She wanted to know if it was okay to speak openly about their relationship.

Sally told her, “You decide what you want to say, how open you want to be.” That moment gave Tam the freedom to finally share the truth.

Memories Recreated for the Screen

Sally Ride was a private person. She and Tam didn’t take many photos together, so the filmmakers had to get creative. Director Cristina Costantini said they used actors to recreate moments based directly on Tam’s memories. These scenes helped bring their relationship to life for the audience.

Tam doesn’t hold back in the film. She speaks openly about their love, their early connection, and the final days of Sally’s life. Her voice gives the film its emotional center. Producer Lauren Cioffi said Tam was the closest and most intimate link to Sally. Her narration changed everything for the project.

A Story from the Heart

Tam shares a few emotional moments in the film that truly show how deep their connection was. She says there are parts where she breaks down, especially when talking about Sally’s illness. Describing those moments brought tears to her eyes and touched her deeply.

Their relationship wasn’t just a hidden chapter—it was a full, rich part of Sally’s life. Tam hopes the film helps people see Sally as more than just an astronaut. She wants the world to know her as a whole person, with love, courage, and humanity.

“We had a wonderful relationship from the time we were kids until we became lovers,” Tam said. “I think it’s something to be proud of.”

Sally is not just a documentary about a space hero. It’s a story about love, loss, and the strength to live your truth.
