Robbie Amell Reflects on ‘Upload’ Season 4 Finale: “It Just Feels Right”
Meta Title: Robbie Amell on Upload Season 4 Ending: “It Feels Real and Satisfying”
Robbie Amell, the star of Amazon Prime Video’s Upload, opened up about the emotional and powerful finale of Season 4, calling the ending both satisfying and true to the story. In a recent interview with Us Weekly, Amell explained why Nathan’s death in the final episode felt like a natural conclusion for the character’s journey.
Nathan’s Final Moments: A Full Circle Story
Season 4 of Upload ends with Nathan’s body giving out and him choosing not to upload or download again. Instead, he and Nora share a virtual wedding and say goodbye before he dies naturally. The choice marked a big shift in Nathan’s character, and Amell believes that transformation was key to the series’ message.
“This is a guy who would have done anything to save himself in Season 1,” Amell explained. “And in Season 4, the thing that matters to him is the happiness of the person he loves.”
Amell said he didn’t receive the finale script until the day before the table read. Reading it for the first time, he was deeply moved.
“Sometimes you’re trying not to sloppy cry while you’re reading a scene,” he said. “That was kind of the series finale for Upload. Greg Daniels’ words were so beautiful. I couldn’t have thought of a better way to end the show.”
A Character’s Growth Through Life and Death
Since Upload premiered in 2020, Amell has played multiple versions of Nathan—his original self, his digital consciousness, and the downloaded version. Throughout the series, viewers watched Nathan evolve from a self-absorbed tech bro into someone capable of real love and sacrifice.
“The show starts with Nathan being a little egotistical and selfish… and then the audience and Nathan find out at the same time that he’s maybe not as great a guy as he thought he was,” Amell shared.
That arc culminates in Nathan’s choice to live his final moments on his own terms, making peace with the idea of mortality and putting Nora’s happiness above his own survival.
The Creator’s Vision for the Ending
Upload creator Greg Daniels reportedly explored “every different ending” before choosing the one that felt most honest to the story and the characters. While the finale might not have been the fairy-tale ending some viewers were hoping for, it earned praise for its emotional depth and realism.
Amell said Daniels delivered something “incredibly satisfying” with the final chapter.
“That’s not to say everyone will be happy, but I think it’s beautiful, and that it feels real. It just feels right.”
Nora’s Journey and Lingering Hope
Actress Andy Allo, who plays Nora, said she personally would’ve loved a traditional happy ending, but agreed that the ending gave her character a meaningful arc.
“Oh, I don’t want to upload you again and go through this,” Allo explained. “And actually, I’m OK with you dying for real.”
Still, Upload leaves a small window open. In one of the final scenes, Nora is seen wearing her wedding ring and turning down a potential date. A subtle alert on her phone reveals that Nathan’s stored memories are available for download, sparking just enough curiosity for fans to wonder what’s next—even if the story has officially wrapped.
The End of the Line—or Is It?
For now, Upload is finished, with Season 4 delivering a touching goodbye. While Amazon hasn’t confirmed whether there will be any continuation or spin-off, the final moments suggest that some version of Nathan may still exist.
Until then, Amell is proud of how the series ended and the legacy it leaves behind.
“It’s a beautiful, full-circle moment,” he said. “And I’m just grateful I got to be a part of it.”
