Red Sox Beat Twins, But Lose Triston Casas to Scary Knee Injury

The Boston Red Sox picked up a much-needed win Friday night, taking down the Minnesota Twins 6-1 in the series opener at Fenway Park. But the win came at a high cost.

First baseman Triston Casas left the game early after a scary fall at first base. It didn’t look good. And after the game, manager Alex Cora confirmed everyone’s worst fear—it’s a significant knee injury.

The night ended with a solid team win, but it was hard for the players—and fans—to feel happy.

What Happened to Triston Casas?

Casas went down in the bottom of the second inning. He was hustling down the line to beat out a throw from Twins pitcher Joe Ryan. But just as he reached the bag, he slipped, stepped awkwardly on first, and fell hard.

He stayed on the ground for several minutes. The Red Sox training staff came out quickly. They called for a stretcher. He was carted off the field, unable to put weight on his leg.

Casas was replaced in the lineup by Romy Gonzalez, who later contributed with an RBI double.

After the game, Alex Cora called it a “tough moment.” He said Casas was likely in shock and admitted he knew right away the injury was serious.

How Did the Game Turn Around?

Boston started the scoring early with an Alex Bregman home run in the first inning. That gave the Sox a 1-0 lead.

The Twins tied it up in the third on a solo shot by Ryan Jeffers. After that, both starters locked in. Joe Ryan and Brayan Bello were dealing.

Bello had his best outing of the season, going 6.2 innings, allowing just four hits and one run. He also struck out five. Cora called him “electric.”

Ryan was great too, finishing six innings with eight strikeouts.

But it was the Red Sox bullpen and bats that made the difference late. Boston broke the tie in the seventh inning. Singles by Connor Wong and David Hamilton started the rally. Then a bunt moved them over, and Rafael Devers knocked in two with a clutch single.

Boston added three more in the eighth to blow it open.

Who Stepped Up for the Red Sox?

Devers led the way, going 3 for 5 with two RBI. He almost had a third, but Jarren Duran was ruled out at the plate after a video review.

Hamilton also had a big night, with an RBI double and a run scored. Gonzalez, filling in for Casas, had an RBI double of his own.

Duran added an RBI single, and Bregman’s homer was his eighth of the year.

Liam Hendriks closed things down in the ninth to seal the win and end Boston’s two-game losing streak.

What’s Next for Casas and the Red Sox?

Right now, the team is waiting for more details. Cora said Casas is undergoing tests at the hospital. But early signs suggest the injury could keep him out for a long time.

It’s especially hard to watch because Casas missed a big chunk of last season with a rib cartilage tear. He’d been struggling early this year, but had started to turn it around—batting .278 with a 1.069 OPS over his last six games.

His teammates were shaken. “It’s horrible,” Bregman said. “We’re all thinking about him.”

Brayan Bello also shared support, saying the team was “sad and down” after seeing him go down again.

The Red Sox will try to keep momentum going. They’ve now had six straight quality starts from their rotation—something they haven’t done since 2017.

They’ll try to make it two in a row on Saturday. But all eyes remain on Casas and what the team will learn about his knee.
