Predator: Badlands Sets Up a Bold New Start for Alien vs. Predator
Elle Fanning is diving headfirst into danger again, but this time it’s more intense than anything she’s faced before. In Predator: Badlands, she plays Thia, a Weyland-Yutani android who finds herself on the deadliest planet in the universe. The latest trailer reveals a wild, brutal world and a storyline that could be the beginning of a long-awaited Alien vs. Predator reboot.
Fanning’s character isn’t human, but that doesn’t make her journey any easier. She’s dropped into an alien jungle filled with pterodactyl-like beasts, hostile terrain, and man-eating trees. In other words, she’s way out of her element. But the real twist? She ends up forming an uneasy alliance with a young Predator named Dek, played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi.
What makes this Predator different?
Dek isn’t your typical hunter. He’s been cast out by his own clan, which is a rare and fascinating twist in Predator lore. Normally, Predators are confident, dominant, and ruthless. Watching one in a vulnerable or isolated state isn’t something fans are used to. It adds a strange kind of depth to the species that we haven’t seen in most of the previous films.
The trailer hints that Dek and Thia won’t start off as friends. There’s a shot of Dek holding what looks like Thia’s broken android body in one hand, which doesn’t exactly scream trust. But if the story pushes them to work together for survival, their relationship could become one of the more interesting dynamics we’ve seen in the franchise.
Is this leading to a true Alien vs. Predator return?
That’s the hope. While Predator: Badlands isn’t officially branded as an Alien vs. Predator film, it feels like it’s setting the stage. The tone, visuals, and lore hints are pointing in that direction. Thia’s connection to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation ties it back to the Alien universe. And if you’ve been following both franchises, you know that’s a major thread worth pulling.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who gave fans the surprising hit Prey, and produced by a strong team including Jon Davis and Ben Rosenblatt, Predator: Badlands is clearly not just another chapter. It’s a reset with purpose.
The theatrical release is locked in for November 7, and fans are already buzzing. Between the futuristic setting, the new take on Predator society, and Elle Fanning’s android survivor energy, there’s a lot riding on this one.
It may not have Xenomorphs just yet, but Badlands might be the start of something bigger. Something the Alien vs. Predator legacy has been waiting for.
