Pendleton High School Community Grieves Loss of 16-Year-Old Spencer Martin Following Fatal Five Forks Road Crash

The small town of Pendleton, South Carolina, is grieving this week after the sudden and tragic loss of one of its brightest young souls.

Spencer James Martin, a 16-year-old sophomore at Pendleton High School, died in the early morning hours of Monday, May 25, 2026, following a single-vehicle crash on Five Forks Road in Anderson County. He was just days into his summer break, full of plans and promise, when his life was cut short.

According to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office, Spencer was a passenger in a 2014 BMW traveling west on Five Forks Road when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road just before 12:30 a.m.

The car struck a mailbox, hit a ditch, became airborne, and crashed into a tree. First responders found the vehicle deep in the ditch upon arrival. Spencer, seated in the front passenger seat, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two other teenagers in the car were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Coroner Greg Shore noted that all three boys were wearing seatbelts and that there were no signs of alcohol or drug involvement. Wet roads and excessive speed were identified as the primary contributing factors.

Spencer was born on March 26, 2010, in Anderson, South Carolina, and had just finished his sophomore year, looking ahead to what promised to be an exciting junior season on the Pendleton Bulldogs football team.

He had earned the opportunity to wear number 2 as a varsity wide receiver and had been selected to serve as a Battalion Leader during summer football sessions, a responsibility that spoke to the kind of young man he was becoming.

More Than an Athlete: A Friend to Everyone He Met

Those who knew Spencer described him as someone who simply could not walk into a room without making it better. He never met a stranger because, in his eyes, every person he encountered was already a friend.

His coaches and teammates saw tremendous growth in him both on and off the field over the two short years they had with him.

Athletic Director Grayson Howell remembered him as “just an all-around great kid,” and someone the school was genuinely excited to watch grow.

Beyond football, Spencer loved weightlifting, golf, basketball, and fishing. He cheered passionately for the Clemson Tigers and cherished time on the water with family and friends.

He dreamed of a future in construction, coaching, or sports broadcasting, and those who loved him never doubted for a moment that he would have found his way to something great.

Spencer is survived by his parents, Brian and Allison Martin, his older sister Julea Cole, and his baby brother Benjamin, whom he adored without reservation. He also leaves behind a grandfather, two sets of grandparents on his mother’s side, uncles, cousins, and a wide circle of close friends who are now carrying the weight of his absence.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, May 29, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at McDougald Funeral Home in Anderson. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, May 30, at 11:00 a.m., with burial at Memory Gardens in Clemson.

Spencer was 16 years old. He had everything ahead of him.
