Patrick Schwarzenegger Jokes About Joining Arnold and DeVito for a ‘Triplets’ Sequel
Patrick Schwarzenegger might’ve been joking, but fans are definitely listening. During a lighthearted moment behind the scenes of Actors on Actors, the White Lotus actor suggested a legacy sequel idea that’s got everyone buzzing. As Patrick posed for a photo with his dad, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Danny DeVito, he quipped, “This could be Triplets.” One quick comment, and the internet went into nostalgia-fueled overdrive.
The reference, of course, is to the 1988 comedy Twins, where Arnold and DeVito played the most mismatched brothers in cinematic history. A sequel called Triplets has been teased for years, but it never made it to the big screen. Now with Patrick playfully pitching himself as the third sibling, the dream of seeing this trio in a full-blown movie isn’t as far-fetched as it might seem.
The Long Road to Making ‘Triplets’
A follow-up to Twins has been in discussion for over a decade. In 2012, a script was announced with Eddie Murphy lined up to join Arnold and DeVito as their lost sibling. That version fizzled, but in 2021, a new attempt brought Tracy Morgan into the mix. Original director Ivan Reitman was even set to return before his unexpected death in 2022.
That loss put a serious halt on the film. According to Arnold, Jason Reitman—son of Ivan and director of Juno and Ghostbusters: Afterlife—was the one who pulled the plug. Arnold didn’t hold back when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “Jason Reitman f—ed it up! Jason Reitman literally stopped the project when his father died.” The disappointment was clear. Arnold and DeVito were both still eager to make the film, and the financing was reportedly secured.
Could Patrick Actually Be the Third Brother?
So now we circle back to Patrick’s comment. Sure, it was offhand and playful, but is it that wild of an idea? Not really. The original movie wasn’t exactly grounded in reality. If scientists could cook up genetically modified twins that look like Arnold and Danny, who’s to say there wasn’t a leftover embryo hanging around? Just toss in some sci-fi logic and Patrick becomes the defrosted third sibling. Easy.
Hollywood’s been in full nostalgia mode lately. Top Gun: Maverick, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and Twisters all prove that audiences are more than willing to revisit oddball classics. Adding a new Schwarzenegger to the mix might just give Triplets the update it needs.
More Legacy Sequel Ideas from the Arnold Vault
If Triplets doesn’t come together, there’s a whole vault of Arnold classics waiting for a reboot. Imagine Kindergarten Cop: Who is Your Daddy starring Patrick as the new undercover teacher. Or Junior Junior, where the next generation keeps the bizarre pregnancy tradition alive. Even a Truer Lies or Second to Last Action Hero would get some laughs and views.
One thing’s for sure: Patrick’s quick line sparked something. Whether it turns into a full-blown film or not, the idea of the next Schwarzenegger stepping into his dad’s wild cinematic world has fans curious and hopeful.
