Panthers Release Jadeveon Clowney: Why Did the Panthers Release Jadeveon Clowney?

The Carolina Panthers officially parted ways with veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney on Thursday, a move that both frees up $7.775 million in cap space and signals a shift toward younger talent on defense. Clowney, 32, is once again entering late-spring free agency, a familiar spot in his well-traveled NFL journey.

The decision wasn’t entirely unexpected. After selecting Nic Scourton (Texas A&M) in Round 2 and Princely Umanmielen (Ole Miss) in Round 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft, the writing was on the wall. The Panthers are looking to rebuild their pass rush with youth, and Clowney’s release is a natural result of that plan.

What Does This Mean for Carolina’s Defense?

With Clowney gone, the Panthers are putting their faith in Scourton, a 6-foot-3, 257-pound edge rusher with raw power and quickness. He’s expected to slide right into Clowney’s role, giving Carolina a cheaper, higher-upside option off the edge.

The move also marks the end of a short and somewhat productive stint in Carolina for Clowney, who signed a two-year deal last March after the Panthers traded away star pass rusher Brian Burns. In 14 games last season, Clowney registered 5.5 sacks, a drop-off from the 9.5 sacks he tallied in 2023.

While not spectacular, his performance was steady enough to earn him a top-50 edge rusher ranking from Pro Football Focus — a sign that he still has something to offer in the right scheme.

Is This the End for Clowney, or Just Another Stop?

Clowney has made a career out of late signings. Since 2020, he’s joined four different teams after April, usually opting for one-year deals to chase production and playing time. Carolina was the exception, offering him a multi-year deal in a time of need.

At 32, Clowney is likely to draw interest from contending teams who want a veteran presence on the edge at a reasonable price. Think of teams like the Detroit Lions, who could use pass-rushing help without overspending.

He’s no longer the dominant force he once was coming out of South Carolina as the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, but his name still carries weight — and his experience can be a valuable asset in rotational roles.

What Does This Say About Carolina’s Direction?

The Panthers’ offseason strategy is becoming clearer: develop through the draft and manage the cap responsibly. By releasing Clowney and committing to their new draft picks, Carolina is investing in long-term growth rather than short-term patches.

That said, Clowney’s departure does create a leadership void. His presence in the locker room and his ties to the state made him a sentimental favorite. But the NFL is a business, and the team is clearly focused on rebuilding with younger, cheaper talent.

What Else Is Going On With the Panthers?

In a separate roster update, Carolina also placed running back Jonathon Brooks on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, officially ruling him out for the entire 2025 season. Brooks suffered his second ACL tear in Week 14 of last season and will need the full year to recover.

It’s a tough blow for a player with immense potential, but the team is taking a cautious approach — hoping for a full return in 2026.

Is Clowney Still Worth a Roster Spot?

If you’re a team in need of veteran pass rush help, Jadeveon Clowney is still very much worth a look. He’s no longer the game-wrecker he was expected to be a decade ago, but he’s proven to be a reliable rotational defender, capable of pressuring the quarterback and setting the edge.

The Panthers are moving in a new direction, and Clowney’s exit is part of that evolution. For the veteran defender, though, this isn’t the end — it’s just the latest chapter in an ever-changing football journey.

The question now is: Which team will take the next chance on him?
