Oscar Martinez Returns in New ‘The Paper’ Trailer from The Office Creators
Oscar Nuñez is dusting off his office chair — but not exactly by choice. The beloved Dunder Mifflin accountant is back in The Paper, a brand new Peacock sitcom that brings the mockumentary format from The Office to a struggling Midwest newspaper. And judging by the first trailer, Oscar’s not thrilled about facing those documentary cameras again.
Set in Toledo, Ohio, The Paper follows the dysfunctional newsroom of The Truth Teller, a once-respected paper now well past its prime. But when idealistic editor-in-chief Ned Sampson (played by About Time star Domhnall Gleeson) walks in the door, he’s determined to turn things around — even if the odds (and staff) aren’t exactly on his side.
“This place sucks,” Ned declares in the trailer. “But! We are going to make it better.” Easier said than done.
Meet the Staff (If You Can Call Them That)
Ned’s first challenge? Whipping his crew of unqualified misfits into actual reporters. When he asks about their journalism experience, the responses say it all:
“I wrote a paper in junior high.”
“I’ve tweeted.”
“I’ve been in group texts.”
The laughs don’t stop there. The White Lotus breakout Sabrina Impacciatore steals scenes as Esmerelda Grand, the paper’s power-hungry managing editor who gets demoted when Ned arrives. She’s not happy about it and is clearly plotting to get back on top.
In one scene, Ned tries to politely warn her he’s shaking things up. “I hope it’s not too disruptive to have me come in and sort of shake everything up,” he says.
“Oh no, no, don’t be so self-defecating,” she replies — not exactly nailing the phrase.
Oscar’s Not Having It
Towards the end of the trailer, the nostalgia kicks in. Oscar Martinez reappears, and it’s safe to say he’s not thrilled about being in another documentary series.
“Not again,” he groans as the cameras follow him. “I’m not agreeing to any of this!” he shouts, visibly annoyed. “I will make this unusable!” And yes, he drops a few censored words for good measure.
Oscar’s surprise return connects The Paper directly to the The Office universe, suggesting fans might get even more familiar faces down the line.
Who Else Is in the Mix?
The series boasts an ensemble cast that includes Chelsea Frei as Mare, Melvin Gregg as Detrick, Gbemisola Ikumelo as Adelola, Alex Edelman as Adam, Ramona Young as Nicole, and Tim Key as Ken. It’s a wild group, and their chemistry feels perfectly chaotic.
Behind the scenes, the series is led by The Office legend Greg Daniels, who returns as showrunner, executive producer, and writer alongside Michael Koman. The Office UK creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are also on board as executive producers, making this an official extension of the original franchise.
When Does ‘The Paper’ Premiere?
The Paper hits Peacock on September 4 with four episodes right out of the gate. After that, fans can expect two new episodes every Thursday through September 25.
With sharp writing, fresh characters, and just the right amount of Office DNA, The Paper looks like the next must-watch mockumentary comedy — and Oscar’s return might just be the cherry on top.
