Nick Frost Becomes Hagrid in New HBO ‘Harry Potter’ Series Reveal
Nick Frost has officially stepped into Hagrid’s giant boots. And honestly? It’s a wild but fitting choice.
The Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz star is now playing the beloved half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot series. The first image is out, and fans are already reacting to his new look, comparing it to the late Robbie Coltrane’s iconic version from the original films.
The new series, which is being developed for HBO and HBO Max, just started production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K. Filming is expected to continue into spring 2026. So yes, it’s going to be a while—but the magic is definitely brewing.
Who’s Joining the New Hogwarts Crew?
The cast is looking seriously stacked. Dominic McLaughlin is playing Harry Potter. He was picked out of a pool of over 30,000 hopefuls during last fall’s open call. That’s a lot of scar drawings and glasses. Arabella Stanton is stepping into the role of Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley.
And it’s not just the trio turning heads.
John Lithgow will be Dumbledore. Yes, that John Lithgow. Janet McTeer will play McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu is bringing a fresh take to Severus Snape. The cast list keeps growing, and it’s a mix of seasoned actors and fresh faces.
Some of the names already confirmed include:
- Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley
- Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy
- Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley
- Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley
- Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch
- Anton Lesser as Ollivander
There’s a lot of curiosity around how these actors will reshape characters that people have known for decades. Everyone has a mental image of these roles, but this reboot is all about giving them depth across multiple seasons.
How Will the HBO Version Be Different From the Movies?
That’s the big question right now.
This series won’t be a direct remake of the films. Instead, it plans to dive deeper into J.K. Rowling’s original books. One book per season, giving room to explore parts of the story that got cut in the films. Think more background on characters, deeper magical lore, and storylines that only die-hard fans remember from the pages.
Francesca Gardiner, known for Killing Eve and His Dark Materials, is the showrunner and lead writer. That already sets a strong tone. And with Mark Mylod from Succession directing, expect a serious cinematic vibe.
Production is being handled by Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television, with J.K. Rowling involved as executive producer.
This is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious TV adaptations in years. And with Nick Frost now guarding the keys to Hogwarts, it’s clear the show isn’t playing it safe.
