Nicholas Hoult Teases Possible Role in HBO’s Harry Potter Series
Nicholas Hoult almost became Harry Potter once. That bit of trivia still surprises people. He was just a kid then, up for the same role that would make Daniel Radcliffe a household name. He didn’t get it, but now, two decades later, the door to Hogwarts might be open for him again.
During an interview on Today, Craig Melvin reminded Hoult about his original Potter audition. Then he threw out the big question — would Hoult join the new HBO series? Hoult didn’t say no. He laughed it off, saying he’s probably too old for Harry now, which, fair enough. But he didn’t close the door either. He admitted he loves the books and the world J.K. Rowling built.
Could Hoult Fit Into The Wizarding World Now?
Fans who know Hoult’s work can easily picture him slipping into Hogwarts — just not as the Boy Who Lived. He’s played everything from a sweet zombie in Warm Bodies to a snarky noble in The Great. He’s got range. If he wanted in, there are plenty of parts he could make his own.
Hoult even joked that he has director Mark Mylod’s number. The two worked together on The Menu back in 2022. Sliding into James Gunn’s DMs landed him Lex Luthor in the next Superman. So why not shoot a text to Mylod about Hogwarts too?
Right now, a big chunk of the Hogwarts cast is already locked in. Newcomers like Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout are stepping in as Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Season one has other heavy hitters too — John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and more.
So if Hoult wants in, he’ll need to find a corner of the castle that’s still open. A young Sirius Black flashback? A new take on Remus Lupin? A sinister Death Eater? There’s room if the writers want to get creative.
What Makes This Harry Potter Show Different?
This series isn’t a side story or spinoff. It’s a full redo. HBO’s plan is to spend an entire season on each book. More time means more detail — the kind fans have been craving for years. That means more room for side characters, plot threads that got skipped in the films, and maybe even a few fresh faces.
Rowling herself says she’s working closely with the writers, despite the controversies that follow her. She’s already read the first two episodes and gave them her stamp of approval. That’s a big deal for Potter diehards, whether they agree with her views or not.
Casting updates have been dropping steady. Draco, Seamus, Parvati, Lavender — even the Dursleys — all have actors now. Bigger supporting roles like Lucius Malfoy and Cornelius Fudge are filled too. But there’s always space for familiar faces in the background — and a name like Hoult’s could add buzz.
It’s all just talk for now. But Nicholas Hoult saying he’d think about it is enough to get Potter fans wondering. He missed out on being Harry once. Maybe this time, Hogwarts will call him back in a different way.
