Mariska Hargitay Recalls Emotional Surprise Gift from Husband

Mariska Hargitay has played Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU for over two decades, but even she couldn’t script the emotional rollercoaster her husband put her through for her 60th birthday. What started as confusion and fear turned into one of the most heartfelt surprises of her life.

A Gift Wrapped in Mystery and Emotion

During a Q&A for her documentary My Mom Jayne at HamptonsFilm’s SummerDocs series on July 17, Hargitay opened up about the unforgettable moment when her husband, Peter Hermann, gifted her something incredibly personal — her late mother Jayne Mansfield’s grand piano.

But it wasn’t your average birthday reveal. It came with suspense, nerves, and a bit of comedy.

“Get in the Car”: A Mysterious Ride

It all began on the final day of filming in Los Angeles. Hargitay recalled that Hermann suddenly called and said, “There’s an Uber outside. I need you to get in the car.” At first, she resisted. But Hermann insisted. “Do as I say and get in the car.”

Hargitay admitted she was furious. To make things worse, she noticed all location-sharing from Hermann and their three kids was turned off. That’s when real panic kicked in.

She joked, “I’m sure that my husband’s gonna have me whacked,” a line that had the audience cracking up.

The Emotional Unveiling

As the Uber drove her past familiar landmarks into unknown streets, Hargitay’s concern deepened. Eventually, she arrived at a warehouse where Hermann, their children, and the documentary’s co-producer Trish Adlesic were waiting — along with camera crews to capture the moment.

Inside was Jayne Mansfield’s piano, beautifully preserved. Mansfield tragically died in 1967 when Hargitay was only 3 years old. Seeing the piano again was a deeply moving moment for the actress.

“It Was a Reclamation”

Speaking to the audience, Hargitay said the gift left her speechless. “It was one of the best things in my life,” she shared. “It was a reclamation. It was everything that I wanted — and it was a surprise, so it was extraordinary.”

Even though the experience started with some serious nerves, Hargitay said she wouldn’t change a thing. “It’s still like a dream come true,” she added. “It’s magic.”

Sometimes the most treasured gifts come with a little chaos. In Mariska’s case, it came wrapped in mystery, love, and a powerful connection to her late mother.
