Loyola College Watsonia Student Samuel Maddela, 15, Mourned by School and Basketball Family

The Watsonia and broader Melbourne basketball community is grieving this week following the sudden and tragic passing of 15-year-old Samuel Maddela, a Year 10 student at Loyola College Watsonia and a beloved member of the Rebelz Basketball Club.

Loyola College was among the first to share the heartbreaking news, posting a tribute on social media that described Samuel as “a valued member of our Loyola College community” whose loss was deeply felt by students, staff, and all who knew him.

The school’s message closed with a prayer, asking that eternal rest be granted to Samuel and that perpetual light shine upon him. Hundreds responded with condolences, with one family friend writing that his smile “was infectious and could light up a room.”

At the same time, another noted that he would be especially missed by his dearest friend, Christian.

The hashtag #Forever15 appeared repeatedly in tributes, a quiet but powerful reminder of just how young Samuel was when he left this world.

Basketball Community Stands Together in His Memory

The ripple of grief extended well beyond the school gates and into the basketball courts of the Diamond Valley Basketball Association.

Rebelz Basketball Club, of which Samuel was a proud member, announced that all of their teams would wear black armbands in his honour during Saturday’s games. The club also confirmed that DVBA had agreed to observe a minute’s silence before every Rebelz game across the weekend. This gesture drew an outpouring of appreciation from families across the association.

Neighbouring clubs were quick to respond with solidarity. Cougars Basketball Club shared the news with their community, calling on all families, players, and supporters who were playing against Rebelz that weekend to show compassion and respect during the minute’s silence.

Greenhills Basketball Club also acknowledged the loss and pointed their community toward a GoFundMe campaign launched to support the Maddela family through what is undeniably one of the most devastating periods a family can endure.

The response from the wider basketball network was a testament to the tight-knit nature of community sport. These clubs, often rivals on the court, came together without hesitation to honour one young man and wrap his family in as much warmth and practical support as they could offer.

A Family Held by a Community

Samuel is survived by his parents, Eugene and Leila, his sister Victoria, and a wide circle of family and friends who have been left shattered by his absence.

Messages directed to his parents have flooded social media, with people from all corners of the community expressing their love and sorrow.

“Words can’t express the pain you must be going through,” wrote one commenter, capturing what so many others were feeling but struggling to articulate.

The GoFundMe campaign established in Samuel’s name has provided people with a tangible way to show their support, whether through donating or simply sharing the link to reach more people who loved him or wish to help.

Samuel Maddela was 15 years old. He was a student, a basketballer, a friend, and a son. To those who knew him, he was simply Sammy, a boy with a big heart and a smile that stayed with you. May he rest in peace.
